DOE review shows City’s good job with grant

City of ClarksvilleClarksville, TN – The City of Clarksville recently received a favorable report for its administration of an Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant.

A Department of Energy team conducted a monitoring visit on July 12th in the city, and in its July 20th report, indicated no problems were found with the management of the federal grant, which was awarded in August 2008.

“The monitoring team was pleased with the City of Clarksville’s administration of the grant to date, which is on track to be completed within the grant period of performance,” the report reads. “The team did not identify any corrective actions.”

The three-year grant was for $1,114,900. So far, $1,084,328 of the grant has been spent to complete 97.3 percent of the work for which it was intended. The remaining work is expected to be finished in August.

The bulk of the grant money, $732,900, went to retrofitting City buildings with energy efficient equipment and controls. The major project was replacing chillers for the air conditioning system at City Hall. Another major project was replacing streetlights with LED units at a cost of $252,000.

The majority of the remaining money has been spent on assessing the City’s energy consumption and developing a plan to increase efficiency and reduce the City’s energy needs.
