Challenging schedule sets tone for 2011-12 Golf Govs

APSU Sports: Men’s Golf

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University men’s golf team will face another daunting schedule for the 2011-12 season, which includes fall tournaments hosted by University of Kentucky and University of Cincinnati, as well as its home event – the F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate.

In all, the Govs will play in 12 tournaments – five fall events and seven spring events – including the Ohio Valley Conference Men’s Golf Championship, which is slated for the third consecutive year at Dickson’s GreyStone Golf Club.

As usual, head coach Kirk Kayden constructed a schedule that will challenge his team with tough golf courses against the best competition available. That much is evident in the Govs first two fall tournaments – September 17th-18th at Kentucky’s Bluegrass Invitational and September 26th-27th at Louisville’s Cardinal Intercollegiate.

“We are looking forward to another competitive schedule playing against a number of big-conference schools,” Kayden said. “Our players know going into our program they will play on difficult course against good players in both the fall and spring. I’ve always felt the tougher schedule really prepares our team for the OVC Championship.”

The fall slate continues with a return trip to the Cleveland State Invitational, played at the renowned Canterbury Golf Club –  a club that has hosted all five major championships; the PGA Championship, the Senior PGA Championship, the U.S. Open, the Senior U.S. Open and the U.S. Amateur.  Cincinnati’s Bearcat Invitational, hosted at Traditions Golf Club, is the final tune up prior to the Govs home event – the APSU F&M Bank Intercollegiate, which is held at the lengthened Links at Novadell.

“We expect another solid field at our home event with most of the OVC schools being represented,” Kayden said. “They’ll be adding more than 300 yards to the course this year. If the weather is good, this should make it a challenging test.”

The spring season opens at the Samford Men’s Intercollegiate, March 5th-6th, and includes events hosted by the University of San Francisco, Arkansas-Little Rock, Arkansas State and a new addition at the University of Missouri – the home of former APSU head coach Mark Leroux. The tournament is a return trip for the Govs after Leroux’s Tigers finished second to the Govs at the 2008 F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate.

Kayden’s team is set to play at Ball State’s spring tournament prior to the OVC Championship in late April.
