Sounds End Winning Streak With 8-6 Loss

Nashville SoundsNashville, TN – The Nashville Sounds’ six-game winning streak came to a halt with an 8-6 loss to the Las Vegas 51s in the third game of a four-game series on Sunday evening at Greer Stadium.

With the loss and Memphis Redbirds win, Nashville (62-60) dropped to third in the PCL American Northern Division, trailing the division-leading Omaha Storm Chasers by 4 ½ games.

The Sounds collected 12 hits in the game, led by designated hitter Erick Almonte going 3-for-5. Mat Gamel, Caleb Gindl, and Taylor Green all added two hits.

Center fielder and leadoff hitter Logan Schafer went 0-for-3 with two walks to snap his 11-game hitting streak.

Las Vegas starter and Toronto Blue Jays #1 prospect Kyle Drabek (3-2) scattered 11 hits and one walk for five runs (four earned) in 5 1/3 innings.  All of his runs came in the first inning.

The Sounds trailed 4-0 early in the top of the first inning after committing two throwing errors that led to three unearned runs.

Nashville batted around in the next frame and scored and got five runs back to take a 5-4 lead. Left fielder Jordan Brown and Green collected one-out singles to get the rally started. Almonte brought home the first run on an infield groundout, which turned into a fielding error and Brown coming home to score.

After Gamel extended his hitting streak to a season-high 13 games to load the bases, second baseman Eric Farris laced a two-run double down the third base line and into left field. The scoring in the frame concluded when Gindl knocked a two-run single to center field.

Las Vegas left fielder Travis Snider tied the game at 5-5 in the third inning with a solo homer off over the wall in right center. The long ball was Snider’s third of the season.

The 51s went ahead for good at 8-5 in the top of the sixth inning. Third baseman Chris Woodward and second baseman Manny Mayorson chased Amaury Rivas from the game with singles. After reliever Sean Green came into the contest and induced ground out for the first out, right fielder Ricardo Nanita jacked a three-run homer just beyond the reach of Gindl over the right field wall.

Nashville scored their final run in the bottom of the ninth inning. Brandon Boggs walked, moved to third on an Almonte single, and scored on a Gamel groundout.

Right-hander Amaury Rivas pitched five plus innings, surrendering seven runs (four earned) on seven hits while striking out seven. The loss ties Rivas with Iowa’s Jay Jackson for the most in the PCL.

Green gave up one run in 2 2/3 innings while recording two strikeouts. Randy Flores finished the contest with scoreless 1 1/3 innings.

The Sounds and 51s will continue their series at 7:05pm CT on Monday evening at Greer Stadium. Right-hander Josh Butler (7-6, 4.97) will take the mound against Las Vegas right-hander Chad Gaudin (0-0, 9.00).
