Cougars down the Indians Friday Night

Cougars win “Battle of the River” game bringing the trophy back to the Academy

Clarksville Academy Cougars vs Montgomery Central IndiansClarksville, TN – Led by their defense, the Clarksville Academy Cougars defeated the Montgomery Central Indians 33-14 in the “Battle of the River” game. Dylan Ragsdale ran back an interception for a touchdown in the 3rd quarter.  He followed it up with a fumble recover in the 4th quarter that he return 31 yards for a touchdown.  That score sealed the fate of the Indians.

This rivalry game drew one of the largest crowds to ever attend a Clarksville Academy football game.

On their first possession, the Cougars marched down the field on a 87 yard drive led by a Josh Marciano 63 yard scamper.  The drive stalled and Carter Salyers came on to kick a 23 yard field goal giving the Cougars a 3-0 lead. At the end of the 1st quarter with time expired, Ron Washington ran through the Indians front line 80 yards for a touchdown. The two point conversion attempt fail. The Cougars were ahead 9-0 at the end of the first period.

At the start of the 2nd quarter, Tyler Norton returned the kickoff 96 yards to give the Indians their first score of the night making the score 9-7. The Cougars responded by taking their next possession 67 yards down to the Indians 1 yard line. Marciano then ran the ball in from one yard out. Salyers added the extra point giving the Cougars a 16-7 advantage.

The Cougars defense clamped down on the Indians in the second half of play. Ragsdale scored one for the defense by running back an interception for a touchdown giving the Cougars a 23-7 lead. The Indians defense responded by swamping Josh Marciano in the backfield causing a fumble. John Riley recovered the fumble in the end zone for the Indians to cut the margin to 23-14.

From that point on, it was all Cougars. Ragsdale ran back a fumble 31 yards to make the score 30-14. Later, before the end of the 4th quarter, Salyers came on and connected with a 33 yard field goal to give the Cougars a 33-14 victory.

Next Up

Clarksville Academy plays Stewart County at home on Friday night at 7:30pm.

Montgomery Central plays Friday night at 7:30pm against East Robertson.
