APSU Sports: Women’s Soccer
Clarksville, TN – Freshman Claire Pultz had a record-setting four goals as Austin Peay State University women’s soccer team rewrote the record books with a 14-0 season-opening win at Alabama A&M, Friday.
“I’m pleased with the result and glad that we came out healthy,” head coach Kelley Guth said. “I feel like we learned something from it and that’s important to us.”
The Lady Govs opened their second-straight season with a win, and did so in dominant fashion. They set single-game program records for goals (14), assists (9) and points. Pultz’s four goals were an individual single-game record, while her eight points, along with eight points by sophomore Tatiana Ariza, also were APSU single-game marks.“It was a great opportunity for our team to take ownership for what we’re doing on the field,” Guth said. “While we dominated the flow of the game, we still had to pay attention to the little details and I felt like we did a good job at that. We were able to stick to our game plan and put the ball in the back of the net.”
Junior Emily Perkins also added three goals. Sophomore Natalia Ariza finished with a goal and two assists, as did sophomore Andy Quiceno. Junior Renny Robinson had one goal and one assists, while junior Jocelyn Murdoch had one goal and sophomore Joceline Quiceno had two assists.
After finishing third in the 2010 Ohio Valley Conference race, the Lady Govs preseason training focused on developing the ability to control play during a match. The ability to play a full 90 minutes at a high intensity, which they did in an exhibition win against St. Louis, was put to test against the Bulldogs.
“Today was a great indication that we can go out there and play a full game,” Guth said. “We separated ourselves and that’s what we’re going to have to continue to do.”
The Lady Govs return to action with a 2:00pm, Sunday match at Chattanooga. That match follows Saturday’s Media Day at the Dunn Center, in Clarksville, which begins at noon.
