Fiers Dominates As Sounds Beat Division-Rival Memphis, 7-1

Nashville SoundsNashville, TN – The Nashville Sounds snapped a three-game losing streak with a 7-1 victory over the cross-state rival Memphis Redbirds on Friday night in front of 8,544 fans at Greer Stadium.

Nashville starting pitcher Mike Fiers (6-0) continued his dominance from the mound, allowing just one run on three hits and no walks in seven innings of work.

Including strikeouts to five of the first nine batters faced in the game, Fiers became the second Sounds pitcher to strike out a season-high 10 batters this season, matching a mark previously set by Frankie De La Cruz on July 23 vs. Iowa.

Fiers is now posting a 1.42 ERA (8er/48.2ip) with 52 strikeouts in his 48 2/3 innings as a starter for Nashville.

Third baseman Taylor Green and right fielder Caleb Gindl both enjoyed good evenings for the Sounds in the win. Green went 2-for-4 with a homer, double, and three RBIs. Gindl also added two hits with a homer and three RBIs.

Gindl got the evening started by belting a solo homer of Memphis starter Brian Broderick in the bottom of the second inning for a 1-0 Sounds lead. The homer was Gindl’s 15th of the season.

Nashville plated three more runs for a 3-0 advantage in the bottom of the sixth inning. After left fielder Jordan Brown singled up the middle, Green lined an RBI double down the right field line. The double was Green’s team-leading 37th of the season, which moved him into a tie for fourth place with Drew Denson (1993) and Brad Nelson (2008) on the Sounds single-season list.

Later in the inning after an intentional walk to first baseman Mat Gamel, Gindl crushed a two-run single to center field for the next two runs.

After Redbirds left fielder Shane Robinson led off the game with a double, Fiers retired the next 20 consecutive Memphis batters, a new season-high by a Sounds pitcher this season. Memphis right fielder Nick Stavinoha then crushed his 28th homer in the seventh inning to give the Redbirds their only run.

The Sounds tacked on three more runs in the next frame for a 7-1 advantage. Center fielder Logan Schafer singled and scored the first run on the ensuing double from Brown down right field line. Green then jacked a two-run bomb down the right field line onto Chestnut Street. The long ball was his 22nd homer of the season.

Herrera ended the game with two scoreless innings in relief.

Broderick (7-6) gave up four earned runs on eight hits in six inning pitched.

The Sounds and Redbirds continue with the fourth game of a five-game series on 6:35pm CT on Saturday night at Greer Stadium. Right-hander Wily Peralta (2-0, 1.80) takes the mound for Nashville against Memphis lefty Nick Additon (3-8, 5.00).
