Sounds Even Road Series With 7-3 Win In Iowa

Nashville SoundsDes Moines, IA – The Nashville Sounds evened their road series against the division-rival Iowa Cubs by posting a 7-3 victory on Tuesday evening at Principal Park.

Martin Maldonado and Edwin Maysonet each drove in three runs on the night for the Sounds (69-69), who got two-hit efforts from five different players to pace their 12-hit attack.

After Iowa took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a Lou Montanez RBI single, the Sounds responded with three runs in the top of the second inning to grab a 3-1 advantage against Cubs starter Nick Struck.

Mat Gamel, Maldonado, and Andy Gonzalez each singled against Struck to load the bags before Maysonet quickly emptied them with a bases-emptying, three-run double to left to push Nashville in front.

The Cubs pulled back within a run at 3-2 in the third inning against Sounds starter Josh Butler, who struggled with his control in the frame. After the right-hander walked the bases loaded with one out, he managed to escape the jam with only one run crossing home. D.J. LeMahieu pushed across the lone score with an RBI infield single before Butler induced an inning-ending double play from Matthew Spencer to escape the bases-loaded jam.

Maldonado extended the Nashville lead to 6-2 in the top of the fifth when he belted his second home run in two nights, a three-run shot off the facing of the suites beyond the left field wall. Logan Schafer drew an inning-opening walk and Jordan Brown followed with a single before both later trotted home on Maldonado’s two-out blast, the backstop’s eighth of the year.

PCL home run leader Bryan LaHair (2-for-3) bashed his 38th big fly of the year to lead off the home half of the sixth frame, a towering shot to right off Butler that made it a 6-3 contest.

The Sounds tacked on an insurance run in the top of the eighth against I-Cubs reliever Kyle Smit. Pitcher Daniel Meadows drew a walk to open the inning, moved to third on a Schafer double, and raced home on an Erick Almonte sacrifice fly.

Iowa threatened in the ninth against Sounds reliever Daniel Herrera, putting the first two batters on vase, but the left-hander retired the next three hitters in order to end the contest with no damage.

Butler (9-7) earned his team-leading ninth win of the year for Nashville. He allowed three runs on five hits over 5 2/3 innings of work, walking four batters and striking out three.

Struck (2-4) absorbed the loss for Iowa after giving up six runs on eight hits in 4 2/3 frames of action.

The teams continue the series with another 6:35pm meeting on Wednesday evening. Right-hander Mike Fiers (6-0, 1.42), a winner in six of his first eight starts, will man the bump for the Sounds and face Iowa right-hander Jay Jackson (7-13, 4.57).
