Memphis, TN – The Nashville Sounds dropped their fourth straight contest on Sunday evening, falling 5-2 to the division-rival Memphis Redbirds at AutoZone Park.
Nashville – which out-hit Memphis 8-4 in the contest – left nine on base on the night, finishing just 1-for-15 with runners in scoring position.
Memphis took the night’s first lead by plating an unearned run against Josh Butler in the bottom of the first inning.
With one out, Tyler Greene reached on a fielding error by Sounds shortstop Edwin Maysonet, stole second, and came home to score on Nick Stavinoha’s double down the left field line, the lone hit permitted by Nashville starter Josh Butler through the first five innings of play.
After leaving a runner in scoring position in each of the first five innings, the Sounds finally broke through in the sixth against Memphis reliever Pete Parise. With one out, Brandon Boggs (2-for-4) legged out his second double of the night before scoring the tying run on Caleb Gindl’s RBI two-bagger down the right field line, which chased Parise from the contest.
Nashville missed a chance to take the lead when Gindl was caught stealing third just prior to Mike Rivera hammering a double off the center field wall.
Memphis responded to the Sounds’ score immediately, plating four runs off Butler in the home half of the sixth to reclaim the lead at 5-1.
Adron Chambers and Greene opened the frame with consecutive singles before Stavinoha came through with his second run-scoring knock of the night, a two-run double to left. The two-bagger upped the slugger’s Redbirds-record RBI total to 109 on the year.
The inning continued as Memphis loaded the bases when Andrew Brown drew a walk and Bryan Anderson was hit by a Butler pitch. Freddie Bynum followed by drawing a five-pitch walk from the right-hander to force home Stavinoha for a 4-1 lead. The Redbirds plated their fourth run of the frame when Pete Kozma lifted a sacrifice fly to center.
Nashville closed out the evening’s scoring in the ninth with a single run against Memphis reliever Chuckie Fick. Caleb Gindl drew an inning-opening walk, stole second, moved to third on a Rivera flyout, and later scored on an Eric Farris fielder’s choice groundout.
Jess Todd (2-4) was awarded the victory for the Redbirds after working 1 2/3 scoreless frames of relief.
Butler (9-8) took the loss for the Sounds after giving up five runs (four earned) on four hits over six innings of work.
Nashville will look to avoid a series sweep when the Sounds and Redbirds wrap up the 2011 season with a 1:05pm. Labor Day finale on Monday. Right-hander Mike Fiers (7-0, 1.21) will man the bump for Nashville to face Memphis right-hander Brian Broderick (7-6, 5.04).
