Richards wins, Lady Govs sweep Thorobred Classic

Austin Peay State University Lady GovsFrankfort, KY – Sophomore Xiamar Richards took home her season’s second victory and Austin Peay State University women’s cross country team swept the top five spots for its first victory, Friday, at the Thorobreds Stampede hosted by Kentucky State.

Prior to the race head coach Doug Molnar set a goal of winning the event and the Lady Govs came through big. Not only did they win the event, they had all eight runners finish 14th or better in the 38-runner event. Austin Peay had an average finishing time of 19:05.03. That time was 2:27 faster than host Kentucky State who took home team second-place.

Behind Richards, who finished the five-kilometer race in 18:23.45, was senior Janelle Avery’s second-place finish (18:42.18), junior Chantelle Gray in third-place (18:55.39), freshman Kendra Kirksey in fourth-place (18:58.88), and sophomore Miranda Weed’s fifth-place finish (20:25.22).

The Lady Govs success did not stop in the top five as they finished with eight of the top fourteen positions. Junior Heather Theilacker took home seventh (20:56.71) in her first race with the Lady Govs. Freshman Shannon Christian took home 13th (22:59.82) and junior Aylssa Molnar placed 14th (23:00.34).

The Lady Govs dominating victory could have not came at a better time with the Ohio Valley Conference Championships just 18 days away (October 25th). The Lady Govs have one more meet scheduled next Saturday at the Fast Cats Classic in Owensboro, KY.
