Hebron, KY – Austin Peay State University men’s golf team is in third after the first two rounds at the UC Bearcat Invitational, hosted by Cincinnati at Traditions Golf Club.
The Govs are eight strokes off the lead with a 36-hole 578, but oddly enough do not have a player inside the top 10. However, three players are t-13th, while the other two are t-17th, a display of consistency that is welcomed by Govs head coach Kirk Kayden.
“We played consistent golf today,” Kayden said. “Our guys played a solid first round and then we scraped a little in the second. But overall, it was a good day, we played well.”
Sophomore Anthony Bradley had the Govs best round, posting an opening-round 70, but firing a 75 in the second round. Junior Dustin Korte and freshman Tucker Wallace each shot 72-73, to tie Bradley at 145.
Meanwhile, sophomore Trey Tarpley shot 74-72 and sophomore Marco Iten offset an opening-round 71 with a second-round 75.
“Tucker had a really good day,” Kayden said. “This being his first-ever 36-hole day, he had a chance to do something. He had a triple-bogey there at the very end, but other than that he did really well.”
Austin Peay will play in the final pairing with Kentucky and Dayton, Tuesday, for a chance to make up eight strokes over the final 18 holes.
“Our goal is to keep putting ourselves in the final group,” Kayden said. “If they can do that, eventually they’ll get comfortable there and get one. That’s the thing about golf; when you get comfortable, that’s when you really play well.”
