Hopkinsville, KY – Austin Peay State University women’s golf team couldn’t match Monday’s school record-tying round, but the Lady Govs still played well enough to end in fourth place at the F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate, played in near-perfect conditions, Tuesday, at The Links at Novadell.
The Lady Govs, who entered the day in fourth after shooting a 300 Monday, shot a 303 for a 603 total, Tuesday, to edge out Belmont (604) for fourth.
Murray State won the event with a tourney record 584-20 strokes better than the previous low score. Jacksonville State closed with a 289 to end in second place at 588, with Eastern Kentucky third at 599.
Jacksonville State’s Lourdes Lopez fired a tourney-record 66 (previous low was 70) to win medalist honors with a three-under-par 139. Murray State’s Alexandra Lennartsson finished second with a two-under 140, after shooting a 68, Tuesday.
“The 303 was a pretty good score for us,” said APSU coach Sara Robson, who had been hopeful of seeing her team break 300 for the first time. “Obviously, it could have been a lot lower-we had some three-putts out there. We just have to keep working at it. You know you are going to have a couple, but we have to keep working to cut those numbers down.”
Austin Peay sophomore Rachel Deaton was APSU’s lone Top 5 finisher, taking fifth after shooting an even-par 72, Tuesday, to end at two-over 146, her best Lady Govs finish-she was sixth at the SIUE Intercollegiate a year ago.
place tie with a 147, her best finish as a Lady Gov.
“I was really proud of Rachel’s score today,” Robson said. “She played really solid golf-she had two birdies and two bogeys. Yesterday, she didn’t have any birdies so it was good to see come back with those today.”
Monday’s tourney co-leader, junior Holly Batey, backed up her 71 with a 76, Tuesday, to end in a sixth-place tie, also her best career Lady Govs finish.
Ashley Averitt (77-77=144) was tied for tied for 28th while junior Lauren Bond (78-78=156). Freshman Marta Gutierrez shot a 158 (80-78) to end in a 44th-place tie.
“Holly put a really solid round together today,” Robson said. “She never had been in a position she was this morning, not only leading the tournament but being under par for the first time as well. So for her to shoot 76 today it was good round. I think she had just a couple of bad swings all day long. We were glad to see that.
“Averitt had a 77 today, but she really battled to get that. It was good to see her battling again with her short game on track. It was good to see Tabitha have a real solid round today and it was to see both freshmen break 80 today.”
