Lend Lease and Campbell Crossing Officially Begin Its Participation in the Obama Administration’s Better Buildings Challenge

“Greening” 65.3 million sq ft of real estate means more jobs

Campbell CrossingFort Campbell, KY – Lend Lease, a global property and infrastructure group with expertise in sustainable building initiatives, officially began its partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy in President Obama’s Better Buildings Challenge, an energy efficiency program developed to create jobs, save money and reduce our country’s dependence on foreign oil.

As part of the partnership, Lend Lease has set a target to reduce energy consumption by at least 20 percent within the next five years for its Military Housing Privatization Initiative (MHPI) portfolio consisting of approximately 40,000 homes, 800 historic structures, 19 offices, and 19 community centers, encompassing more than 65.3 million square feet of real estate nationwide. The partnership will help create dozens of jobs at military installations throughout the U.S.

“Lend Lease has long been a supporter of green building practices and we are proud to join forces with the White House, the Department of Energy and the Department of Defense,” stated Krista Sprenger, VP, Director of Sustainability for the Lend Lease
Americas region. “Today’s launch is the first step in beginning to make all 40,000 Lend Lease homes as energy efficient as possible, and helps us provide the opportunity to create much needed construction jobs around the country.”

To reach its Better Buildings Challenge goal, Lend Lease will continue to green retrofit existing structures, develop an energy consumption reduction program aimed at teaching the 140,000 people who live or work in one of its communities how to reduce energy consumption to support a sustainable environment and focus on renewable energy solutions such as solar energy generation, fuel cell technologies, wind and ground source heating and cooling technologies.

“Partners in the Better Buildings Challenge are committing their organizations as leaders in saving energy, saving money, and showcasing the best energy-saving strategies,” said Kathleen Hogan, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency at the U.S. Department of Energy. “By spurring private investment in residential and commercial building upgrades, the Better Buildings Challenge will increase the demand for energy-saving products and services, create jobs, and help families and businesses reduce energy waste and save money.”

The Better Buildings Challenge is an energy-efficiency program developed to create jobs, save money, reduce our country’s dependence on foreign oil and make our air cleaner and aims to support President Obama’s goal of helping businesses save
nearly $40 billion annually in energy costs, enabling them to grow, invest in new technology, and create American jobs through these retrofit programs. Investing in innovative clean energy technologies that make America’s commercial buildings more efficient will put Americans to work and save money by saving energy.
