Iten named OVC Golfer of the Week

Austin Peay State UniversityMarco ItenClarksville, TN – Sophomore Marco Iten, of the Austin Peay State University men’s golf team, was named the Ohio Valley Conference’s Men’s Golfer of the Week after capturing his first tournament title, Tuesday, at the F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate.

“This has been an unbelievable few days for Marco,” head coach Kirk Kayden said. “He really had it going and that led to him making a whole bunch of putts. The icing on the cake came during the playoff and to have his whole team there to watch him do it made it even better.”

Iten drained a 40-foot birdie putt on the second playoff hole, becoming the seventh Austin Peay player to win the Govs home tournament. It was an unlikely win in a sense as Iten never seemed to be in the hunt until mid-way through the final round.

The Switzerland native fired three under-par rounds for the tournament, opening with a 70-69 in the first two rounds. His second-round total can be attributed to a strong finish as he played the final five holes at three-under par. That late push carried over into the final round as he made four birdies on the front nine.

When he made a pair of bogeys on Nos. 8 and 10, his late run looked to be in jeopardy. However, he made a 15-foot birdie putt on No. 17 to put him back in contention and give him the necessary momentum for the playoff.

After having struggled through the early fall schedule, Iten found his swing at the perfect time. His win helped the Govs win their second-consecutive tournament – marking the first time APSU had won back-to-back titles since 2003.

This is the fourth time an Austin Peay golfer has been named the league’s player of the week. Junior Dustin Korte has earned the honor once and sophomore Trey Tarpley has picked up two honors this fall.
