Last Week

Tennessee TitansIn last week’s battle with the Texans, the Titans fell behind early and were never able to make up lost ground. The Texans scored 27 unanswered points before quarterback Matt Hasselbeck completed a five-yard touchdown pass to tight end Jared Cook for Tennessee’s only score.

Texans quarterback Matt Schaub passed for 296 yards and two touchdowns in leading his team to victory. Meanwhile, running back Arian Foster delivered 115 rushing yards and 119 receiving yards and three total touchdowns.

Meanwhile, the Colts enter the week still looking for their first win in 2011. They traveled last week to New Orleans, where they lost to the Saints by a final score of 62-7.

Indianapolis ColtsHead coach Jim Caldwell’s squad was dealt a significant blow prior to the season when it was learned quarterback Peyton Manning would be out indefinitely with a neck injury. He has been inactive in all seven of the Colts’ games this season.

In Manning’s absence, third-year signal caller Curtis Painter has started the last four contests. The former sixth-round draft pick from Purdue has passed for 873 yards, five touchdowns, two interceptions and a passer rating of 85.2 in 2011.

Additionally, the Colts have former Titans quarterback Kerry Collins, who was signed just prior to the season. Collins, a 17-year veteran who was with the Titans from 2006 through 2010, started the first three games of 2011 before suffering a concussion against Pittsburgh on September 25th.

YWCA Drive

Fans attending the game are encouraged to participate in the “Undie Sunday” charitable drive benefitting the YWCA Weaver Domestic Violence Shelter. The YWCA and the Titans are asking fans to provide much-needed new women’s undergarments for shelter residents, including all sizes of underwear, bras and socks. Volunteers will be stationed at several drop sites around LP Field to collect donations.

Titans-Colts Series History

This week the Titans are attempting to end a five-game losing streak to the Indianapolis Colts. From 2006 to 2008, the Titans went on a run of three wins in four contests against the Colts, but starting with the 2008 regular season finale, the Colts have taken each game. In 33 all-time meetings, the Colts lead the series 20-13.

On January 2nd, the Titans and Colts closed out the 2010 regular season against each other at Lucas Oil Stadium. A fumbled center-quarterback exchange by the Titans inside the game’s final two minutes led to Adam Vinatieri’s decisive 43-yard field goal that gave the Colts a 23-20 victory.

The last time the Titans and Colts met at LP Field was three weeks earlier in a Thursday night game (12/9). The Colts jumped out to a 21-0 lead early in the contest and suppressed the Titans’ comeback efforts to prevail 30-28. Peyton Manning passed for 319 yards for the Colts in the victory.

In 2002, the first year the Titans and Colts met as opponents in the newly-formed AFC South, the Titans won both games on their way to claiming the first AFC South title. The Colts then won seven consecutive meetings, taking both games in the 2003, 2004 and 2005 seasons and the first meeting in 2006. Indianapolis claimed the division crown every year from 2003-06, until the Titans re-acquired it in 2008.

The Titans and Colts have met only once in the postseason, a 19-16 Titans victory in a Divisional Playoff game in the RCA Dome on January 16th, 1999. Eddie George rushed for 162 yards, including a 68-yard touchdown run to help lead Tennessee during its run to Super Bowl XXXIV.

The teams first clashed in 1970 following the AFL-NFL merger. The then-Baltimore Colts defeated the then-Houston Oilers 24-20 during the Colts’ run to a Super Bowl V Championship.

Titans-Colts: The Last Meeting

In the Titans’ 2010 season finale at Lucas Oil Stadium, Adam Vinatieri kicked a 43-yard field goal to give the Colts a 23-20 victory. With the loss, the Titans finished the 2010 season with a 6-10 record.

In a contest that was tied four times, the Titans were close to seizing their first lead of the game with less than two minutes remaining. Colts running back Dominic Rhodes’ fumble was returned 20 yards to the Indianapolis 37-yard line by Titans safety Michael Griffin. Two plays later, however, the Titans lost the center-quarterback exchange between Kerry Collins and Kevin Matthews, and Colts defensive end Robert Mathis recovered the ball.

Taking over with 1:25 on the clock, Colts quarterback Peyton Manning completed a 20-yard pass to receiver Blair White. Joseph Addai then gained six yards on a run, and Manning’s 11-yard pass to tight end Jacob Tamme set up Vinatieri’s kick as the game clock expired.

The Colts jumped out to a 3-0 lead after their first drive of the game. They marched 42 yards on 11 plays, and Vinatieri connected on a 48-yard field goal.

Marc Mariani returned the ensuing kickoff 47 yards to help set up Rob Bironas’ 26-yard field goal to tie the score.

The teams exchanged field goals again in the second quarter. Vinatieri capped a 10-play, 59-yard drive with a 44-yard field goal. Then, at the conclusion of a series that featured three passes from Kerry Collins to Kenny Britt for 47 total yards, the Titans tied the score with a 42-yard field goal.

Following the two-minute warning in the second quarter, the Colts scored the game’s first touchdown. Manning capped a 78-yard series with a seven-yard touchdown pass to Reggie Wayne. Bironas attempted a 61-yard field goal as time expired in the second quarter, but the kick sailed short.

In the third quarter, the Titans evened the score at 13-13 on their first possession. Collins found Nate Washington for a 38-yard gain, and then on third-and-four, he connected with Britt for a 21-yard touchdown. The play was not without consequence for the Titans, though, as Britt exited the game with a groin injury. He totaled a team-high 85 receiving yards on five receptions prior to leaving.

The Colts wasted little time getting back in front. Helped by pass interference and unnecessary roughness penalties enforced against the Titans, the Colts reached the end zone on a 30-yard pass from Manning to Pierre Garcon.

The Titans subsequently scored their second touchdown to tie the score once more. Beginning at their own 30, they went 70 yards on nine plays. Collins dumped a pass to Chris Johnson, who dashed into the end zone for a 15-yard touchdown.

The teams exchanged a combined seven punts in the fourth quarter before Rhodes’ fumble set the game’s final events in motion.

Despite the loss, Collins completed 28 of 39 passes for 300 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions (111.1). He passed Johnny Unitas for 11th place on the NFL’s all-time passing yards list.
