Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – Six Austin Peay State University players scored in double figures as the Governors rallied from a 12-point first-half deficit to defeat Central Missouri, 107-96, in exhibition men’s basketball action, Thursday night, in Dave Aaron Arena.

The contest was the first exhibition for both teams. Central Missouri is a Division II powerhouse from Warrensburg, MO, which has an assistant coach, Brad Loos, the son of APSU head coach Dave Loos.

The players the younger Loos helped recruit gave Austin Peay all it could handle, especially in the first half. The Mules outscored the Govs, 57-49, and led by 12 points with 2:22 left in the period as forward Dominique Long scored 13 points and guard Boo Hunter 12 as Central Missouri shot a scorching 61.1 percent (22 of 36).

But the Govs systematically sliced the deficit in the second half before the Govs finally took the lead, 73-72, on a Will Triggs layup.

Josh TerryThe Mules eventually would go back up by four points, 79-75, before the Govs would reel off eight straight points. Senior forward Josh Terry hit consecutive baskets, the second gave the Govs the lead for good, 81-79 as the lead would grow to 85-81. The Mules would make it a one-point game, but a four-point play—Justin Blake was fouled while making a three pointer—would blow the game open to a 10-point lead at 95-85 with 6:08 remaining.

From there, the Govs maintained the lead and the game was punctuated when junior Jerome Clyburn, who is taking over the point guard duties, knocked over a press row table on a steal. He picked himself and scurried to the other end to hit the layup for the Govs 100th and 101st points.

TyShwan EdmondsonClyburn finished with 16 points, including a perfect 12-for-12 from the free-throw line. His backcourt mate TyShwan Edmondson also tossed in 16. Terry led the Governors with 20 points and five assists while Melvin Baker added 15. Center John Fraley recorded a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds while blocking three shots. Triggs finished with 14 points off the bench.

The Govs shot 59 percent from the floor, going 36 of 61 from the floor while connecting on 29 of 37 from the free-throw line (78.4 percent).

Long led the Mules with 20 points while Hunter added 16 and Lance Beckwith 15. After shooting 61.1 percent in the first half, Central Missouri shot only 39.5 percent (15 of 38) in the final half.

Individual Notes

Jerome ClyburnSix Governors scored in double digits on the night, including all five starters. Senior Josh Terry led the way scoring 20, junior Jerome Clyburn and senior TyShwan Edmondson each scored 16, senior John Fraley and senior Melvin Baker had 15 apiece, and sohomore Will Triggs came off the bench to score 14.

In his first action since having season ending knee surgery last year, senior Anthony Campbell played nine minutes in the first half hitting the only shot he took on the night.

John Fraley Fraley was named the Copies in a Flash Player of the Game after recording a double-double – scoring 15 points and adding in 11 rebounds.

In his first live action as a Governor, junior Jerome Clyburn was perfect from the free-throw line making all 12 attempts.

Team Notes

Melvin Baker The Govs took the lead for good at 81-79 with 9:19 remaining in the second half. Austin Peay used an 18-8 run over the next four minutes, building a 99-87 advantage, to put the game out of reach for the Mules.

After shooting 53 percent (17-of-32) in the first half the Govs came out strong hitting seven consecutive shots to open the second half. On the night the Governors shot 59 percent (36-of-61) from the field.

It was a team effort down in the defensive paint as the four different Governors combined to block eight shots on the night, led by Fraley who recorded four.

Will TriggsThe Govs moved the ball well offensively as there were five different Governors with at least two assists. Terry led the team with five assists on the night.

The Governors defense clamped down in the second half forcing the Mules into 15-37 (40 percent) shooting. In the first half the Mules made 22-of-36 (61.1 percent) of their field goals.

Austin Peay outscored Central Missouri, 46-34, in the paint.

Head coach Dave Loos Quotes

Dave Loos“We had to guard them better and keep them out of the lane in transition. We gave them too many uncontested looks, but what I was really thinking was just hold on guys, they can’t keep shooting that well.  Fortunately for us that was true.  We did have to improve our defense. I’ve got to give them a lot of credit; they just shot lights out.  Their guards are really good.”

“This is the kind of game we need. I think we can really learn from this. (Central Missouri) did cool off and part of that was us and part of it is you just can’t keep shooting like they were in the first half.  They had some trouble with our big guys in the second half too.  I thought our bigs played well and our perimeter guys were willing to throw it in there.  That’s huge because it shows good chemistry and we played together pretty well.”

“We just weren’t able to keep people out of the lane.  We didn’t get some matchups in transition. We had some times where we’d come down the floor and a guy would be looking for the man he was assigned to at the beginning of the game.  That’s not the way it is.  Sometimes you have to match up with different people in order to stop the transition.  We can do a better job at that.  I’m glad we played this game. If we had lost, I would still be glad, because we need to play a good team and we did tonight.”

“I was really pleased with the way the guys were willing to throw it inside.  That’s our game.  We ran the ball well.  I thought we changed into the offense pretty good.  We’ve got some work to do getting back on defense.”
