Austin Peay Lady Govs Basketball down Bulldogs in exhibition outing

Austin Peay State University Lady GovsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University women’s basketball team put a lot of pieces on the court in a 62-48 exhibition victory against Cumberland, Monday night, at the Dunn Center.

Austin Peay put 11 players on the court in the exhibition and all the new faces and combinations led to a sloppy contest. The Lady Govs shot just 35.7 percent (20-of-56) from the field and committed 21 turnovers in the contest.

Cumberland scored the game’s first five points, including two before the opening tip on a pair of technical free throws. The Bulldogs maintained their slim advantage for the game’s opening 3:28.

Austin Peay tied the game, 7-7, courtesy freshman Kristen Stainback’s three-point field goal at the 16:32 mark. That basket began a 23-2 run over the next seven-plus minutes that helped Austin Peay build a 27-9 lead at the 9:01 mark. Five different APSU players scored during the run, senior guard Whitney Hanley scoring six points to lead the break and Stainback adding five.

Whitney HanleyCumberland fought back with a 13-2 run, cutting the lead to seven points, 29-22 with 3:32 remaining. Austin Peay would score the half’s final eight points to take a 34-23 halftime lead.

Austin Peay scored the second half’s first field goal – a three-pointer by Stainback – to push its lead to 14 points and did not look back as the game was not closer than 12 points the game’s remainder. The Lady Govs maintained their double-digit lead despite suffering through a 7-of-24 (29.2 percent) shooting performance in the period.

Meghan BussabargerStainback led the Lady Govs with 15 points, making 6-of-12 field goals and 3-of-7 from three-point range. Junior Meghan Bussabarger recorded an 11-point, 10-rebound double-double performance. Hanley scored nine points but filled out the box score with six assists, three rebounds and three assists.

Casie Cowan led Cumberland with 12 points. Ten different players scored in the contest for the Bulldogs.

Austin Peay opens its regular-season schedule with a 7:00pm, Friday home contest against Southern Illinois at the Dunn Center.
