Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – Keeping an eye firmly on its future needs, Austin Peay State University’s baseball team added depth to its infield ranks, adding Jake Walters, of Sparta, IL, with a national letter of intent during the early November signing period.

Walters, a 5-10, 190-pound infielder, batted .490 last season while leading Vianney High School, of Kirkwood, MO, to the Missouri Class 4A State Semifinals where they lost to the eventual state champion.

Walters finished his junior campaign with 15 doubles, four triples, five home runs, 32 RBI and 47 runs scored. He was named to the second-team all-state by the Missouri High School Baseball Coaches Association and was a first-team all-Metro Catholic Conference selection.

“We are excited that Jake has decided to be a part of our program here at Austin Peay,” said Governors head coach Gary McClure. “Jake is an extremely talented hitter and has a chance to be a major offensive threat throughout his entire career at Austin Peay. We believe he is one of the best hitters in the state of Missouri. Jake has a lot of similarities of our current third baseman Greg Bachman, although Jake may have more power.”

Walters will join current Governors first baseman John Hogan on the 2013 roster. He also played summer league baseball with the St. Louis Pirates, which is led by former Governors standout Rick Strickland.
