Tulsa, OK – Oral Roberts used an 18-0 second-half run to overcome a four-point deficit and defeat Austin Peay State University, 71-59, Saturday night, in non-conference basketball action played at the Mabee Center.
The contest was the return of the ESPN BracketBuster contest that saw ORU, a Summit League power, come to Clarksville two seasons ago.
The victory was Oral Roberts’ second straight and improves them to 2-2 on the season. The Govs are still seeking their first win as they slip to 0-3 on the young season.Austin Peay led foul-plagued Oral Roberts, 45-41, with 14:29 remaining in the second half and had the ball with a chance to extend its lead. In fact, Josh Terry missed a drive inside and after an ORU turnover. The Governors had three more chances on its next possession. TyShwan Edmondson missed a jumper as did Melvin Baker. Then Will Triggs grabbed the rebound and miss a point-blank shot inside.
From that point on the momentum shifted. All-America candidate Dominique Morrison hit a pair of free throws to make it a two-point game and then Roderick Pearson, who started his career at Southeast Missouri, nailed a three pointer to give the Golden Eagles a 46-45 advantage, a lead they would never relinquish.
During the 18-0 Oral Roberts run, which featured dominating inside play from Steven Roundtree, the Govs missed 11 field goal attempts, including three from close range, two free throws and committed two turnovers. By the time Herdie Lawrence nailed a three pointer with 6:57 left, the Governors deficit was in double digits, with his bucket narrowing the margin to 59-48.
APSU cut it to seven, 63-56, with 1:03 left, but the Golden Eagles made sure of no Govs comeback by making eight straight free throws in the final minutes.
Roundtree, the 2010-11 Summit League Newcomer of the Year, led all scorers with 24 points and eight rebounds, five on the offensive glass. Forward Michael Craion followed with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
The Golden Eagles only outrebounded Austin Peay 39-38, but tallied 15 offensive rebounds that led to 15 second-chance points. In fact, the Govs held ORU to just 41.4 percent shooting but those second-chance opportunities helped lead to APSU’s demise.
The Governors, meanwhile, shot only 36.7 percent from the floor. At the 16-minute media timeout of the second half APSU had connected on 16 of 33 shots. They went just 6 of 27 (22.2 percent) the game’s remainder.
TyShwan Edmondson led the Govs in scoring with 14 points while Triggs added 11 points and a team-best six rebounds. Josh Terry added 10 points.
