Austin Peay Governors Basketball mounts furious comeback but is foiled in Overtime

APSU Sports Information: Austin Peay Basketball

Austin Peay State University GovernorsBowling Green, OH – Austin Peay State University overcame a 17-point second-half deficit to force overtime but couldn’t complete the comeback as the Governors fell to Detroit, 94-93, Wednesday in the final game of the College Basketball Experience, played at the Stroh Center.

The loss left the Govs 0-6 heading into their 7:00pm home opener, Saturday, against Middle Tennessee. Detroit snapped a two-game losing streak to improve to 3-3 on the young season.

The Governors, who trailed 50-37 at halftime, saw that deficit reach 17, 56-39, barely two minutes into the second half. Austin Peay then began chipping away. In fact, utilizing full-court pressure the Govs, still down by 15, went on a 13-4 run to slice the deficit to six as Melvin Baker, Josh Terry and TyShwan Edmondson each scored a pair of baskets in the streak to make it a 62-56 game with 12:50 remaining.

Melvin BakerHowever, Detroit immediately pushed its back to double digits and it remained that way until the 7:14 mark of the game when Baker hit back-to-back shots to again make it a six-point game, 72-66, with 6:51 remaining.

Two free throws by Baker and a layup by Edmondson after a steal cut the Govs’ deficit to two, 74-72 with 5:02 left. After a Josh Terry steal-one of five for the senior forward on the night-the Govs missed an opportunity to take the lead. In fact, Detroit pushed their lead back to five, 78-73, with 1:55 left.

TyShwan EdmondsonAfter the two teams traded baskets the score stood 80-75, at the 1:24 mark. That’s when Baker scored his 16th and 17th points of the half. This time it was Baker coming up with the steal with 54 seconds left that set up an Edmondson three pointer to tie the game with 49 seconds remaining.

The Govs then fouled Ray McCallum, but the All-America candidate missed the front end of the one-and-one, only to see Evan Bruinsma grab the rebound and get fouled. He too missed the front end of the one and one, giving APSU a chance to win the game in the final 39.2 seconds.

Jerome ClyburnHowever, Jerome Clyburn’s driving jumper from the lane was long, sending it to overtime. In overtime, the Govs never led and when Doug Anderson threw home a dunk with 28 seconds left, it gave the Titans a five-point advantage the Govs could not overcome.

Austin Peay after shooting 34.5 percent from the floor the previous night against George Washington, responded with a 49.3 percent night, converting 36 of 73. But their woes behind the three-point line continued as APSU converted just 4-of-13 (30.8 percent). APSU also struggled at the free-throw line, making just 17 of 28 (60.7 percent).

Josh TerryEdmondson led five Govs in double figures with 22 points while Baker finished with a double-double, scoring 21 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Josh Terry and Will Triggs each had 14 points.

Six Titans scored in twin figures, led by Chase Simon’s 20 pointrs and Doug Anderson’s 18.

Detroit, favored to win the Horizon League, finished the night shooting 57.4 percent (35 of 61)from the floor, including seven three pointers.

The Copies in a Flash APSU Player of the Game was Melvin Baker.
