Austin Peay State University Lady GovsCarbondale, IL – Austin Peay State University women’s track and field team saw its newcomers open the indoor season in impressive fashion at the Saluki Fast Start Invitational, Saturday, at the SIU Recreational Center.

In her first meet as a Lady Gov, junior transfer Chantelle Gray won the 600-meter run, finishing in 1:34.76 – 1.8 seconds ahead of the second-place runner. She was not the only Lady Gov to finish in the top-10 of the event as Alyxandra Pinkston took home ninth-place (1:42.89).

Gray – along with fellow newcomer Sharese Braziel, Taelor Slaughter, and Pinkston – finished fifth in the 1600-meter relay with a time of 4:04.17.

“Gray had a really good time in the 600-meter,” said Lady Govs head coach Doug Molnar. “Her finish bodes well for her down the road in the 800-meter run. She ran the anchor leg in the mile relay and did an outstanding job in that as well.”

Returning sprinter Cenitra Hudson also showed a promising start to her season as she finished the 60-meter dash in 7.94 – just three-hundreths of a second shy of her career best. She also finished seventh in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.72.

“Hudson had a solid run in the 60-meter dash and came close to a personal best in the 200-meter dash,” said Molnar. “She also ran a good lead-off leg on our second 1600-meter relay squad. I believe she made a strong statement in this opening meet.”

Freshman Nicole Bressner led the Lady Govs field effort with a third-place finish in the pole vault, with a 3.36-meter mark.

The Lady Govs will take a brief hiatus before returning to action at the Ed Temple Classic, January 7th, hosted by Tennessee State.

“Overall it was pretty solid job by our squad,” Molnar said. “Now we have to maintain our training over the Christmas Break.”
