Baker named Copies in a Flash APSU Athlete of the Week

Austin Peay State UniversityMelvin BakerClarksville, TN –  Melvin Baker, a senior on the Austin Peay State University men’s basketball team, has been named the Copies in a Flash APSU Athlete of the Week.

The Amarillo, Texas native recorded back-to-back double-digit scoring performances last week. He scored 13 points at Lipscomb, Monday, and 15 points against nationally-ranked Memphis, Saturday. Baker was the only Governor to score in double-digits against both Lipscomb and Memphis.

In two games last week, the senior forward shot a strong 59 percent from the field (13-22) scoring 28 points, grabbing 14 rebounds, and blocking five shots. Baker had a career-best four blocks at Lipscomb.

The Copies in a Flash APSU Athlete of the Week is selected by the APSU Sports Information staff each Tuesday during the academic year. Copies in a Flash, of Clarksville, sponsors the award.

Other notable performances by Austin Peay athletes included

Junior Leslie Martinez, of the women’s basketball team, recorded the first double-double by a Lady Gov this season, scoring 10 points and grabbing 11 rebounds against nationally-ranked Vanderbilt, Thursday. Martinez continued to play well Saturday, with nine points, two assists, two steals, and seven rebounds against UAB.

Junior Chantelle Gray, of the track and field team, won the 600-meter run at the Saluki Fast Start, Saturday, finishing the race in 1:34.76. Gray continued to perform well as the anchor in the 1600-meter relay, which finished fifth, in 4:04.17.
