“Friends of LBL” Receives Generous Bequest from Mr. James T. Ramey

Land Between the LakesGolden Pond, KY – The Land Between The Lakes Association, “Friends of LBL,” was the recent recipient of a $61,500 bequest from Mr. James T. Ramey. This thoughtful donation will have a positive impact on thousands, possibly millions, of future visitors to Land Between The Lakes (LBL).

James T. Ramey, who was born in Eddyville, KY, was an attorney and nuclear expert who served as counsel for the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission’s Chicago office.  Shortly after being appointed as a commissioner with the Atomic Energy Commission by President John F. Kennedy, Mr. Ramey played a key role in the critical negotiations that averted nuclear war during the 1962 Cuban missile crisis.”

Mr. Ramey obtained degrees from Amherst College in Massachusetts and Columbia Law School in New York City.  It was while in New York that he met his wife, Estelle Rubin, who went on to become a well-known endocrinologist and professor at Georgetown University Medical School.  They were together until her death in 2006.

Mr. Ramey had a long and distinguished career starting as an attorney for the Tennessee Valley Authority in Knoxville.  In 1956, he was named executive director of the Joint Commission on Atomic Energy in Washington, D.C.  Mr. Ramey served as a commissioner until 1973, and was described in a news article published shortly after his departure as, “perhaps the single most influential member of the commission in the last decade.”

“We are very grateful to Mr. Ramey and his family for this thoughtful bequest to our organization,” said “Friends of LBL” Executive Director, John Rufli.  “We have always known LBL is a special place that means a great deal to many people.  This generosity is a significant reminder of that fact.”

Mr. Ramey had a tremendous influence on our country’s history.  He moved in circles with presidents and international leaders.  He was involved in some of the most sensitive matters to ever affect this nation.  Yet he retained a connection to his home area and to LBL.  Thanks to Mr. Ramey’s generous bequest, “Friends of LBL” will be able to help other people form similar connections to LBL.
