Austin Peay Lady Govs end Pre-Christmas slate with back-to-back Games

Austin Peay State University Lady GovsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay will complete a flurry of pre-Christmas action with games on back-to-back days before the holiday break. The Lady Govs will host Florida A&M in a 7:00pm, Tuesday contest, before concluding non-conference play with a 5:15pm, Wednesday meeting against Alabama A&M.

Austin Peay returns to action following an overtime victory at Belmont, Sunday, and will conclude a stretch of three games in four days with the back-to-back outings.

Austin Peay used an impressive 27-9 second half run that lasted 9:29 to take a second half lead at Belmont and help it force overtime, the Lady Govs made 12 of their 13 shots during the burst, including a stretch of nine consecutive made shots.

After losing the turnover battle in their previous two contests, the Lady Govs won the battle at Belmont, 26-20, and scored 23 points off turnovers.

Leslie MartinezAPSU recorded a season-high tying 14 steals at Belmont, including six by Leslie Martinez and five Whitney Hanley, it was their eighth double-digit steal performance this season. Austin Peay won for the first time when scoring fewer than 60 points in a game.

The win stopped Austin Peay’s eight-game losing streak.

It was APSU’s first overtime victory since defeating Eastern Illinois in the 2009 OVC Championship game and ended a streak of three consecutive overtime losses.

Austin Peay ended an eight-game losing streak with a 58-56 overtime win at Belmont, Sunday. Florida A&M won the Southeastern Louisiana Tournament with an 85-63 victory against Southeastern Louisiana, Saturday. Alabama A&M lost its second-straight contest, with an 86-41 loss at Florida State, Monday.

In that tournament, FAMU defeated Northwestern State, 77-53, before downing host Southeastern Louisiana, 85-63, Saturday. The Lady Rattlers have four players averaging more than 10 points per game.

Senior Antonia Bennett leads the team in scoring (18.7 ppg) and is second in rebounding (8.9 rpg). Senior Qiana Donald leads the team in rebounding (9.8 rpg) and is third in scoring (12.6 ppg). Florida A&M returns five letterwinners, including three starters, from last season’s squad that posted an 18-11 record (9-7 in MEAC).

The Bulldogs put together a four-game win streak earlier this season that included a wins against OVC members Murray State (76-71, Nov. 22) and Tennessee Tech (61-35, November 29th).

Senior Whiquitta Tobar leads Alabama A&M in scoring (19.8 ppg) and rebounding (6.1 rpg). Alabama A&M returns 10 letterwinners and four starters from last season’s squad that finished the 2010-11 season with a 15-14 record (11-7 in SWAC)

Whitney HanleyAustin Peay continues to search for the right starting five combination. The Lady Govs lineup at Belmont was the eighth different starting lineup head coach Carrie Daniels has used this season. This is the second consecutive year a single player has not started every game.

Senior guard Whitney Hanley became the 14th Austin Peay women’s basketball player to reach the 1,000-point plateau with her 21-point performance at Lipscomb, November 14th. Her 1,085 career points ranks 12th all-time. Her 16-point effort at Belmont, December 18th, moved her into 12th in career scoring with 1,133 points.

Senior forward Jasmine Rayner has a little more work to do – needing 88 points to reach the 1,000-point mark.

Meghan BussabargerAustin Peay returns its four leading scorers from last season’s team: Hanley (12.2 ppg), Rayner (10.5 ppg), junior forward Meghan Bussabarger (8.0 ppg) and sophomore guard Nicole Olszewski (8.0 ppg).

Hanley was named to the Preseason All-OVC team after receiving second-team All-OVC honors last season.

Austin Peay is 21-54 (.280) against non-conference teams under head coach Carrie Daniels.

The Lady Govs are 12-27 (.308) in December under Daniels.

Lady Govs Begin OVC Play At Tennessee State

Tennessee State TigersWhen Austin Peay returns to action following the break it will jump into the thick of the Ohio Valley Conference race with three games in five days. The Lady Govs will open OVC action with a 5:30pm Thursday, December 29th contest at Tennessee State.

Austin Peay won both meetings with Tennessee State last season, including a 60-45 contest at the Gentry Center. Those two victories snapped a stretch where the Lady Tigers won six of seven contests.
