Austin Peay Lady Govs Basketball uses second half spark to take down the Murray State Lady Racers

Austin Peay State University Lady GovsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University women’s basketball team used a 16-4 second half run to post a 71-63 come-from-behind victory against Murray State, Saturday, in Ohio Valley Conference action at the Dunn Center.

Trailing 40-34 with 11:26 remaining, Austin Peay scored 16 of the game’s next 20 points. Junior Leslie Martinez scored back-to-back fast break layups during the push, capped by junior Meghan Bussabarger’s conventional three-point play that gave APSU a 50-44 lead with 7:26 that they would not relinquish.

Murray State attempted to charge back in the final 2:30 with a barrage of three-pointers but could not get closer than six points after Kayla Lowe’s long-range three with 30 seconds remaining.

Senior Whitney Hanley led all scorers with 26 points – her fourth straight 20+ point outing. Bussabarger added 18 points and Martinez chipped in 14 points. Each of them grabbed eight rebounds.

Mariah Robinson led Murray State with 17 points. Ashleigh McBean, who scored 14 first-half points, finished with 16 points.

Post Game Notes

Whitney HanleyWhitney Hanley’s 20 points put her over the 20-point mark for the fourth consecutive game. The last time a Lady Govs scored 20+ points in four consecutive games was Ashley Haynes in 2006.

Hanley’s 10 field goals made against Murray State moved her into ninth-place all-time for field goals made at Austin Peay with 442.

Bussabarger, Hanley, and Martinez each grabbed eight rebounds, it is the first time this season three different Lady Govs had at least eight rebounds in the same contest.

The 71-63 victory gives the Lady Govs their seventh-straight victory over rival Murray State.

Leslie MartinezAs a team the Lady Govs recorded 14 assists, breaking double-digit assists as a team for the third-straight game. The 14 assists are the second most this season for the Lady Govs.

The Lady Govs defense forced 12 steals against Murray State. It is the third time in four games the Lady Govs have forced double-digits in steals.

After making only 33 percent on 12-36 shooting from the field in the first half the Lady Govs caught fire in the second half making 54 percent on 17-31 shooting.

The Lady Govs held Murray State to 39 percent shooting from the field. It is the second consecutive game APSU’s defense has held an opponent under 40 percent shooting.

The Lady Govs only committed nine turnovers it is  the first time this season the Lady Govs have committed fewer than 10 turnovers.

Meghan Bussabarger“I feel pretty confident, we played really well in the second half and we got a lot of momentum going and so that carried us through to have our win,” said Meghan Bussabarger.

When asked about the upcoming game against Murray State at Murray, Bussabarger said confidently, “I think Murray State is definately going to come back fired up to play against us, but you know I want to win against Murray State again and just beat them 2 and 0.”

Carrie DanielsHead Coach Carrie Daniels called the game very very exciting, “I think we definately got things going in the second half and that made it a fun game for the fans.” explaining further she said, “We were able to pick up the defensive intensity, force some turn overs with our pressure, and that translated into offensive points for us. The team had lot more energy, a lot more emotion in the second half.”

She sees the win as a confidence builder, and predicts that it will pick up the momentium for the Lady Govs going into the next few games here at home.

Lady Govs Host Jacksonville State

Jacksonville State GamecocksAustin Peay continues its three-game homestand when it hosts Jacksonville State in a 5:15pm, Saturday, January 14th contest. The Lady Govs have won the last four meetings, but three of the four have been decided by eight points or less.

Jacksonville State has struggled to a 3-13 mark this season and is off to an 0-3 start in OVC play, losing those three league games by an average of 20.6 points per outing.
