Austin Peay State University Lady GovsNashville, TN – Austin Peay State University women’s track and field team returned from Christmas break and put forth a solid performance at the 13th Annual Ed Temple Classic hosted by Tennessee State at the Gentry Center.

Coming into the event the 1600-meter relay was the race to watch for the Lady Govs. The relay team of Sharese Braziel, Chantelle Grey, Candace Johnson, and Taelor Slaughter did not disappoint, taking home fourth place with a time of 4:04.63. As impressive as their finish was it was just one of many strong performances by the Lady Govs during the day.

“I am real excited how we came back,” said head coach Doug Molnar. “For the most part we came back in shape. Across the board we were pretty good, really solid.”

“Campbell’s school record will be the first of many for her during her career,” said Molnar. “She did a real nice job in this meet and I believe she is going to keep getting better and better.”

Campbell was not the only Lady Gov to perform well in the field events as Nicole Bressner (3.40m) and Molly Bausch (3.25m) took home first and second place, respectively, in the pole vault.

On the track, Lauren Lyles and Chantelle Grey highlighted the day. Lyles took home third place in the 55-meter hurdles finishing in 8.44. Grey, who won the 600m event at the Saluki Fast Start, continued to run well, finishing the 800-meter run in 2:13.11 to take home second place.

“I am really surprised over the improvement from the Southern Illinois meet,” said Molnar. “We still have a long ways to go and a lots of things to work on, but I was pleased overall where we are at.”

The Lady Govs return to action Thursday, when they travel Birmingham, AL for the Blazer Invite hosted by UAB.
