APSU Sports: Austin Peay Women’s Basketball
Clarksville, TN – The Austin Peay Lady Govs entered a rare Wednesday night contest against Tennessee-Martin desperately looking to snap a six-game losing streak and give themselves a much-needed spark heading into the final five games of the regular season.
Despite a career night from Nicole Olszewski, however, the Lady Govs were unable to match the firepower of the second-place Skyhawks, who made 12 3-pointers in a 88-83 victory.
“Coming off a very disappointing loss at SEMO we could have laid down,” Lady Govs head coach Carrie Daniels said. “They bounced back against a very solid and very good team…the defending champions. We battled from tip to final buzzer.
After a back-and-forth first half the Lady Govs (5-19, 2-9 OVC) found themselves trailing by 11 points with just under 13 minutes to play, before making a second-half charge thanks to a career-high 21 points from Olszewski, who finished the night 4-of-6 from beyond the arc.
“She’s not played to the level that we need her to be at this year,” Daniels said. “Tonight she showed the Nicole of last year and where we need her to be for us to be successful. I would hope (tonight’s effort) would give her some confidence.”
Playing with five guards for a prolonged stretch in the second half, the Lady Govs managed to trim the Skyhawks lead to 86-83 with 29 seconds to play.
After a Leslie Martinez jumper rattled out, the Lady Govs had one final chance to cut the deficit to one – or possibly tie the game – but a Whitney Hanley leaner came up empty, sending the Lady Govs to their seventh consecutive defeat.
“Sometimes the past few games it has come down to me shooting it (the last shot),” Hanley said. “When I get a bad shot it really hits me hard. But what are you going to do?”
Hanley finished the night with 23 points on 8-of-17 shooting while Kaitlyn Hill scored 11 points and hauled in eight rebounds.
Playing without Meghan Bussabarger for their fifth straight game due to a concussion, the Lady Govs received a solid reserve performance from Kristen Stainback, who scored 14 points in 25 minutes.
“She was aggressive,” Daniels said. “You could tell she wanted it. She was fighting and that’s what she has to do. That’s going to earn her more minutes. She wasn’t (intimidated by the moment) and that’s the Kristen that we recruited.”
Jasmine Newsome led the Skyhawks (14-8, 8-1) with 27 points on 11-of-22 shooting while Heather Butler tallied 17 points that were paced by four 3-pointers.
With the win, the Skyhawks kept within a game of conference leaders Eastern Illinois, who defeated SEMO 74-48 Wednesday night.
As a team, the Lady Govs outrebounded the Skyhawks 43-33, but were unable to overcome 11 turnovers.
With four days between games, the Lady Govs will now have a chance to rest for their final sprint down the OVC gauntlet.
The Lady Govs could receive a boost from Bussabarger, who is scheduled to be reevaluated Friday, when Tennessee Tech visits the Dunn Center Monday.
And, despite a narrow loss that dropped the Lady Govs further down the OVC standings, Daniels said the team has to remain optimistic going forward.
“Even as poorly as what we’ve played all throughout the season we’ve had chances to win ballgames,” Daniels said. “We just haven’t closed it out and I feel like we’ve done it to ourselves. Hopefully (Wednesday’s game) will give us some confidence. We’ve got to win games. To get in this tournament, we’ve got to win games.”
