Austin Peay Lady Govs Softball’s bats go quiet in final day of the Kennesaw State Classic

Austin Peay State University Lady GovsWoodstock, GA – Austin Peay State University’s softball only managed to score a single run Sunday in the final day of the Kennesaw State Classic, as the Lady Govs dropped two games by the scores of 8-1 to Southern Illinois and 9-0 to host Kennesaw State.

In the opener, Austin Peay (1-3) fell behind 1-0 in the second inning, as SIU Carbondale took advantage of two walks by Lady Govs starter Taylor Mills, with Kelsea Ashton singling in Jayna Spivey.

It would remain that way until the fourth inning, when SIU scored twice more on a two-RBI single by Taylor Orsburn.

The Salukis added single runs in the fifth and sixth inning to make it 5-0, with Meredith Wilson home run in the fifth and Allie VadeBoncouer’s RBI single in the sixth.

The Lady Govs lone run came in the bottom of the sixth off a triple by red-shirt junior Shelby Norton, who drove in freshman Lauren Bradley, after she had reached in an infield base hit.

Shelby NortonNorton and Bradley’s hits were the only hits recorded by the Lady Govs in the loss, with the only other base runner to reach for Austin Peay were on walks to red-shirt sophomore Kristin Whitmire and Norton in the first inning and Whitmire getting hit by a pitch in the fourth.

Southern Illinois added three more insurance runs in the top of the seventh, the first coming on a home run by Spivey to open the inning, while Mallory Duran drove in a run with a single and Wilson scoring off a throwing error by senior catcher Amy Mills.

In the nightcap, Kennesaw State put the pressure on Austin Peay from the outset away by scoring twice in the first inning off Lady Govs junior starter Morgan Brewer, with Sharon Swanson driving in the first run with a double and the other come on a single by Lindsay Vollmer.

Lauren de CastroThe Owls would break the game open in the second inning by scoring five more runs, aided by two Austin Peay errors and highlighted by a grand slam by Swanson.

Offensively, the Lady Govs only managed two hits against Kennesaw State pitcher Abbey Mixon–both by sophomore Lauren de Castro–and finished with nine strikeouts and no walks.

Kennesaw State would tack on single runs in both the fourth and fifth innings, with Bianca Durant driving in the run in the fourth with a single and Jessica Cross doing the same in the fifth.

The Lady Govs return to action next Saturday and Sunday, as they travel to Jackson, MS, to play the Jackson State Lady Tigers in a three-game series.
