Brentwood, TN – Junior forward Leslie Martinez, of the Austin Peay State University women’s basketball team, used a career-best effort to earn adidas Ohio Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week honors, the league office announced, Tuesday.
Martinez, of Copperas Cove, Texas, posted career highs in both points (20) and rebounding (14) en route to her season’s third double-double in Saturday’s 88-81 overtime victory against Morehead State.
She finished regulation with 18 points and 11 rebounds. In overtime, she made a pair of free throws that pushed the Lady Govs lead back to six points, sealing the win.
It is the second consecutive week an Austin Peay women’s basketball player has been recognized by the league. Freshman guard Shelby Olszewski was named Freshman of the Week last week. They join senior guard Whitney Hanley who was named the league’s Player of the Week following the season’s opening week.
Austin Peay begins the final week of regular-season play with a 5:30pm, Thursday contest at league-leading UT Martin.
