Austin Peay Governors Baseball pushes past the Iowa Hawkeyes with Jordan Hankins’ walk off single

APSU Sports: Austin Peay Baseball

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – Second baseman Jordan Hankins’ walk-off single in the 10th inning pushed Austin Peay State University’s baseball team to a 4-3 come-from-behind victory against Iowa, Saturday, in day two action of the 2012 Riverview Inn Classic at Raymond C. Hand Park.

Austin Peay (6-3) got the game-winning opportunity courtesy Iowa’s lone error in the contest – a one-out throwing error that allowed designated hitter Jon Clinard to reach base. Third baseman Greg Bachman followed with a seeing-eye single up the middle that avoided the shortstop and allowed Clinard to reach third base. Hankins saw three straight balls before looping a single in front of the left fielder for the win.

Jordan HankinsHankins’ game-winning hit punctuated a strong late-game performance by Austin Peay which rallied from a 3-1 deficit in the final three-plus innings. Catcher P.J. Torres’ solo home run in the seventh closed the gap to one run. One inning later, first baseman Brett Carlson – making his first collegiate start – led off with a single and scored on Clinard’s single through the infield, tying the game and setting up extra innings.

However, it was the Govs relief corps that helped secure the opportunity for the comeback. Kacy Kemmer and Tyler Rogers combined for 3.1 scoreless innings to end the game. Kemmer retired two of the three batters he faced, including a strikeout to end the seventh inning. Rogers followed and struck out five of the nine batters he faced, including the striking out the side in the ninth, to notch his season’s first win.

Zach ToneyIowa (2-6) took advantage of two Austin Peay errors to score single runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to take a 2-1 lead. The Hawkeyes might have done more damage, but Govs starter Zach Toney worked out of trouble in the third and fifth innings – leaving four runners in scoring position in the two innings – before departing in the sixth.

The Hawkeyes tacked on a third run in the seventh when outfielder Ryan Flanagan doubled to right field off reliever Mike Hebert.  However, Iowa starter Matt Dermody surrendered the home run to Torres in the seventh and reliever Tim Fangman coughed up the game-tying run in the eighth.

Hankins finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Catcher P.J. Torres also was 2-for-2 with an RBI. Austin Peay finished with nine hits with five of those hits coming in the final four innings.

Toney was dominant early, retiring six consecutive batters to start the game, but left with no decision after allowing two unearned runs on two hits and six walks while striking out five in 5.2 innings.

Flanagan led Iowa with a 2-for-4, one RBI performance while designated hitter Ryan Rumpf and second baseman Jake Mangler each added a RBI.

Dermody struck out seven but allowed two runs on five hits over 6.2 innings and did not factor into the decision. Patrick Lala, the Hawkeyes fourth pitcher, was tagged for the loss after allowing one unearned run on two hits in one-third of an inning.

Austin Peay wraps up the 2012 Riverview Inn Classic with a 2:30pm, Sunday contest against Akron, which rallied from a 6-2 deficit to defeat Youngstown State in Saturday’s opening game. Iowa will face Youngstown State in Sunday’s first game scheduled for an 11:00am start.
