Austin Peay Lady Govs Softball hosts Tennessee Tech to open Ohio Valley Conference play

Austin Peay State University Lady GovsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s softball team will open the Ohio Valley Conference part of its schedule this weekend as Tennessee Tech comes to town for a three-game series at Cheryl Holt Field.

The two teams will open the series with a 1:00pm, Saturday doubleheader, followed by a Sunday single game at the same time.

Austin Peay (6-8) enters the weekend after spending the last seven days in Oklahoma, going 2-4 overall. That included an 8-0 loss to No. 8 ranked University Oklahoma, Tuesday.

Tennessee Tech (6-11) comes into the series having lost its last three games, including being swept by Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne, Tuesday, in Cookeville, Tennessee.

After 13 games, the Lady Govs are led at the plate by sophomore Lauren deCastro who is batting .333 with a team-best 13 hits and nine RBI.

She is followed by three teammates, senior Catie Cozart (.279), freshman Lauren Bradley (.275) and sophomore Kayla Davidson (.273), all hitting over .270 on the season.

Overall, Austin Peay is batting at a .250 clip after the first 14 games.

In the circle, deCastro leads things with a 4-1 record and 1.89 ERA with 24 strikeouts in 37 innings of work.

Tennessee Tech, who has struggled offensively so far this season is coming in with a batting average of .224 and only one home run. Tech is led by Chanelle Spalding’s .313 batting average, while twin sister Brittney Spalding is the only other Golden Eagle hitting better than .240 at .279.

Holly Thomas leads Tennessee Tech’s pitchers with a 4-5 record and a 2.67 ERA, with 46 strikeouts in 63 innings.
