Clarksville, TN – On March 17th, the Customs House Museum and Cultural Center will host “The Power of Women” an inspirational and informative event for women on women’s issues, including a brunch and performance. Guest speakers will include breast cancer survivor Teri Johnson.
Teri suffered from fibrous lumps in her breasts since she was 15 and is an advocate of self-breast exams. In January, 2006, she got a bilateral mastectomy – complete breast removal. She was only 30.
This is the second year the museum has offered an event specifically geared towards women. Included in the discussions will be topics of estate planning, the changes to hair and skin as one ages, owning a business, and an “investing in your future” session with F & M Bank’s Frazier Allen.
Local caterer The Choppin’ Block will provide a mimosa brunch during the event. Performance poet Thandiwe Shiphrah will cap off the day in the museum’s Turner Auditorium. Ticket prices are $25.00 for the general public and $15.00 for museum members. The event is sponsored by Legends Bank and Clarksville Pediatric Dentistry.
Patrons of “The Power of Women” will also get to enjoy the three exhibits on view. The two-story gallery of the Customs House Museum is filled with “The Words of Women” This year’s annual exhibit focuses on women writers. Participating writers were sent a vintage item to be used as the muse for their work. Prior to exhibit opening, each writer came to the museum and painted all or part of their work on the wall of the gallery.
Knoxville sculptor Annamaria Gundlach’s clay torsos can be found in the Kimbrough Gallery and an installation piece by Denise Stewart Sanabria titled “Quantum Confusion” fills the Orgain Gallery space.
Curator Terri Jordan states “we love to showcase the many talented artists Tennessee has to offer. Visitors will get to see some great diversified examples of art this month.”
