APSU Sports: Austin Peay Men’s Golf
Little Rock, AR – Despite an opening-round 305, Austin Peay men’s golf team sits tied for fourth after 36 holes at the UALR/First Tee Classic, played at Chenal Country Club.
The Govs rebounded with a second-round 291, the second-lowest round of the day behind tournament leader Southeastern Louisiana’s second-round 288.Austin Peay is 13 shots behind Southeastern Louisiana’s two-round 583. Sam Houston State (588) is second, followed by Louisiana-Monroe (594), with Austin Peay and Illinois State tied for fourth at 596. Eastern Michigan is five shots behind the Govs with a 601.
“We just didn’t get off to a good start,” head coach Kirk Kayden said. “This course is lined with trees and we got a little sideways with the driver early on. Once you get in the trees, you have to chip it back to the fairway and sometimes you can’t even get to the green.”
Sophomore Marco Iten is the Govs top player through 36 holes, shooting 72-74 to sit tied for seventh with a 146. In the opening round, the Govs had to count Dustin Korte’s 77, along with 78s from sophomores Anthony Bradley and Trey Tarpley.
All that got turned around for the second 18 holes. It was Tarpley leading the way with a 71, along with Bradley’s 72 and 74s from Iten and freshman Tucker Wallace. The task for the final round will be playing the fairway.
“We’ve got a chance to make a run tomorrow,” Kayden said. “We showed some flashes of the way we played in the fall, today, in the second round. If we can do that tomorrow, we’ve got a chance to do something.”
The final round is scheduled for an 8:00am, shotgun start, with the Govs playing alongside Illinois State and Eastern Michigan.
