The Customs House Museum reopens 1898 Building with an Open House Event April 28th

The Customs House Museum and Cultural CenterClarksville, TN – After months of renovation, the Customs House 1898 building will be reopening on April 28th.

In February, Customs House Museum closed the doors to its 1898 building in order to replace nine undersized, outdated, and malfunctioning Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning units (HVAC) with four commercial units.

The new units are designed for temperature and humidity control; this will allow for better care and protection of the museum’s collection, as well as the historic building itself, and provide a much more comfortable environment for visitors.

The most significant changes to the museum can be found in the Heritage Hall gallery. The drop ceiling and walls built when the building served as the Department of Electricity have been removed to expose architectural details of the 1898 building. The new units have been installed in less conspicuous areas, giving the museum better use of existing space and creating more square footage for exhibits. The result is a larger, more open area.

The 1898 building will reopen to the public on Saturday, April 28th with an Open House event. Admission will be free all day from 10:00am – 5:00pm. The F&M FunMobile will make an appearance from 11:00am – 1:00pm to serve complimentary refreshments (supplies are limited).

Visitors are encouraged to explore the new floor space and exhibits and observe the restored 1898 details. New exhibits will include Celebrating 1898, Civil War Medicine, and Recent Acquisitions: Highlighting Items from the Collection.
