APSU Sports: Austin Peay Baseball
Clarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s baseball team was unable to string hits together and saw its seven-game win streak halted with a 6-2 loss to Belmont, Tuesday night.
Belmont (20-10) had no trouble finding key hits, converting four times with a runner on third base. The Bruins scored a run in the second, third and fourth innings before plating two in the fifth.
Austin Peay was held without a run until the fifth inning when they were able to take advantage of a Belmont error. Right fielder Jon Clinard and left fielder Cody Hudson followed with back-to-back singles to score the run.
The Govs added another run in the eighth, again stringing together a few of their hits. Second baseman Jordan Hankins led off the inning with a double, shortstop Reed Harper followed with a single and catcher P.J. Torres brought the run home with a deep fly ball. However, Harper was caught out at second base attempting to advance, short-circuiting a potential Govs rally.
Harper and Hudson each had three hits to lead Austin Peay’s offense. Hudson and Torres were responsible for the lone RBI.
Govs starting pitcher Rolando Gautier (0-1) allowed one run on three hits and a walk over two innings and was saddled with the loss. Eight Austin Peay pitchers saw action in the contest, including closer Tyler Rogers who recorded the final two outs.
Belmont Catcher Alex Diamond went 3-for-3 to lead an 11-hit offensive outing. Designated hitter Judah Akers had two RBI with a run-scoring single in the third and a sacrifice fly in the eighth.
Austin Peay returns to Ohio Valley Conference action when it travels to Eastern Illinois for a three-game series. Due to the upcoming Easter holiday, the series will begin with a 3:30pm, Thursday contest at Coaches Stadium.
