Nashville Sounds lose to the Oklahoma City Redhawks in series opener

Sounds Out-Hits Opponent Again But Falls To 1-4

Nashville SoundsOklahoma City, OK – The Nashville Sounds came up on the short end of a 4-2 defeat to the Oklahoma City RedHawks on Monday evening at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark in the opener of a four-game series.

The Sounds (1-4) out-hit their opponent for the fourth time in five games this season, besting the RedHawks seven to five in knocks, but suffered their fourth loss in such contests. Nashville has been held to two runs or less in each of its contests this season.

The Sounds grabbed an early 1-0 lead, plating a run in the top of the first inning with a two-out rally against Oklahoma City starter Henry Sosa. After the first two batters were retired, Caleb Gindl continued his early hot hitting by legging out a triple to center then scored the night’s first run when Sean Halton followed with an RBI single to left.

Right-hander Seth McClung got off to a solid start for Nashville. The 6-foot-8 hurler retired 12 of the first 13 RedHawks batters and did not allow a hit under the fifth inning, when Oklahoma City rallied to take the lead with a four-run frame.

The RedHawks, who sent nine batters to the plate in the frame, put together three consecutive singles to start the home half of the fifth, the third of which by Jimmy Paredes plated Brett Wallace to even the score at 1-1. McClung followed with a walk to Landon Powell and the final pitch of the at-bat eluded catcher Martin Maldonado for a wild pitch that allowed Brad Snyder to race home to give Oklahoma City a 2-1 advantage.

Jim Henderson took over on the Nashville hill and hit the first batter he faced before fanning consecutive batters for the first two outs of the frame. He wasn’t able to escape the bases-loaded jam, however, as left fielder Fernando Martinez laced the first pitch he saw from the right-hander to center for a two-run single that extended the Oklahoma City lead to 4-1.

McClung (0-1) took the loss for Nashville in his season debut after being charged with four runs on three hits in his four-plus innings of work. He walked two batters and struck out one.

The Sounds got a run back in the top of the sixth with another two-run rally. Shortstop Edwin Maysonet ripped a two-out double to center off RedHawks reliever Adalberto Flores and scored on a triple off the bat of Corey Patterson, who went 2-for-4 in the contest after opening the season with 11 hitless at-bats.

Nashville would get no closer, though, as Enerio Del Rosario and Juan Abreu closed out the contest with 2 2/3 scoreless frames. Abreu worked around a two-out Hanley Statia single in the ninth to nail down his second save of the year.

Sergio Perez (1-0) earned the victory after working one scoreless inning of relief for Oklahoma City.

The teams continue the series with another 7:05pm matchup on Tuesday night. Milwaukee Brewers top prospect Wily Peralta (0-0, 1.50) will make his second start of the year for the Sounds. The right-hander will be opposed by Oklahoma City right-hander Paul Clemens (0-1, 3.00).
