Nashville Sounds’ Woes continue With 5-1 Loss to the Oklahoma City RedHawks

Nashville SoundsOklahoma City, OK – The Nashville Sounds’ early-season struggles continued on Tuesday evening at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark as they lost their second straight game to the Oklahoma City RedHawks, falling 5-1 in the second game of a four-game series.

The win was the fifth in a row for Oklahoma City, which improved to 5-1 as the Sounds fell to 1-5 on the year.

The Sounds manufactured the game’s first run in unearned fashion in the top of the second inning against Oklahoma City starter Paul Clemens. Corey Patterson led off with a single to right and was sacrificed to second by Eric Farris, moving to third on the play on a throwing error. Martin Maldonado then lifted a sacrifice fly to center to give Nashville a 1-0 lead.

Nashville starter Wily Peralta was solid in the early going, allowing only a J.B. Shuck first-inning infield single through the first four frames before a bit of wildness caught up with him in the fifth.

The right-hander issued back-to-back, one-out walks and, after a Shuck fielder’s choice put runners on the corners, he uncorked a wild pitch that allowed the RedHawks center fielder to move into scoring position. Rehabbing Houston Astros shortstop Jed Lowrie followed with a two-out, two-run single to center that put Oklahoma City in front, 2-1.

Peralta (0-1) took a hard-luck loss after he allowed two runs on only two hits in his five frames of action, walking four batters and striking out six.

The RedHawks extended their lead to 5-1 in the seventh with a trio of two-out runs against the Sounds’ bullpen.

Donovan Hand opened the frame on the hill for Nashville and allowed a one-out Landon Powell single before being struck by a comebacker off the bat of Diory Hernandez and departed the contest after recording an out on the play.

Vinnie Chulk replaced Hand and walked his first batter before surrendering back-to-back doubles to Justin Ruggiano and Fernando Martinez as Oklahoma City pulled ahead by four.

Clemens (1-1) picked up his first career Triple-A victory after holding the Sounds to one unearned run on five hits over five innings of work.

Oklahoma City pitchers stifled the Sounds’ offense throughout the latter portion of the contest, retiring the final 15 batters in a row to secure the victory. Nashville’s final hit and baserunner of the game was a Peralta single that led off the fifth inning.

The teams continue the series with another 7:05pm matchup on Wednesday. Right-hander Mike Fiers (0-0, 1.50) will man the bump for the Sounds to face Oklahoma City right-hander Aneury Rodriguez (1-0, 5.40).
