Austin Peay State University Lady GovsMartin, TN – Austin Peay’s softball team got a huge pitching performance from Morgan Brewer, but it wasn’t enough, as the Lady Govs fell to UT Martin Thursday in an Ohio Valley Conference game at Bettye Giles Field 1-0 – in eight innings.

Brewer, a junior, limited the Skyhawks (30-13, 18-3 OVC) to four hits in her seven and two-thirds innings of work, but it was her only walk of the game – a one-out base on balls to pinch hitter Morgan Lewis – that UT Martin was able to parlay into a run.

Lewis had come in to hit for Kelsey Dixon in the bottom of the eighth inning, after Brewer got Erica Duke on strikes for the first out, and drew the walk when Brewer missed low and inside on a 3-2 pitch.

Dixon came back in to run for Lewis, but was forced out at second on a ground ball off the bat of Sam McClure for the second out.

Morgan BrewerMcClure would then get into scoring position by stealing second.

That set the stage for Kayla Wade, who slapped a 3-2 pitch through the right side of the Austin Peay (12-22, 6-12 OVC) infield and into right field to bring in Dixon with the game-winning run.

Brewer, along with the four hits and one walk, struck out two in the complete-game loss.

The Lady Govs had their own chance to score in the top of the inning, when senior Catie Cozart hit a Baltimore-hop single over the UT Martin first baseman’s head and into right field to lead off the inning.

Lauren de CastroSophomore Lauren de Castro, who had her conference best 13-game hitting streak come to an end, hit behind Cozart to get her into scoring position with a ground out to second base.

Freshman Lauren Bradley would ground out to the pitcher for the second out, with Cozart moving to third.

That brought up Austin Peay’s hottest hitter over the last 10 games in freshman Paige Neely, who had been hitting at a .517 clip over that stretch and had a hit in the top of the fourth inning, but she grounded out to shortstop to end the threat.

Catie CozartThe eighth inning wasn’t the only scoring chance the Lady Govs had on the day, as they put two runs on base in both the second and fourth innings, but couldn’t come up with the go-ahead base hit.

Austin Peay also got a runner to second base in the top of the seventh inning, with one out, but left the runner stranded.

Along with Cozart and Neely; Brewer, seniors Ashley Bolda and Amy Mills and freshman Sarah Rasmussen had hits for the Lady Govs.
