Clarksville, TN – Last year, Jarrett Crawford opened the Clarksville Wado Ryu Karate School. At the academy, Crawford teaches Wado Ryu, a style that originated in Japan. “It’s the first Japanese style,” said Crawford. “It’s completely Japanese.”

Crawford first began displaying his karate moves when he was 8 years old. That’s when he realized that he wanted to open his own school someday. “It’s something I’ve always wanted to do from the time I was little and beating up on my cousin,” said Crawford. The instructor is a 4th degree black belt.

At the dojo, there is a photo of Wado Ryu? founder Hironori tsuka on the wall near a Japanese national flag. A few feet away is an American flag. There is also a 270 punching bag, workout equipment for adults, and large space for combat and practice.

Wado Ryu differs greatly from kung fu and other fighting styles. “Wad?-ry? is basic fighting principles. You don’t want to waste a lot of movement,” he explained. Conserving energy and using swift counters are important factors of Wado Ryu.

The school has classes on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays at 4:30 pm. There is a children’s class for children aged between 5 and 10, and another for children between 11-15 years old. The adult classes begin at age 16 and up. The price for the course is $99 a month. There are  discounts for active and retired military.

Crawford says that he is teaching self-confidence, self-discipline and self-esteem through learning self defense.

The school is located at 2535 Madison Street Suite H. For more information on Clarksville Wado Ryu, visit www.clarksvillewadoryu.com.
