Austin Peay Lady Govs Softball face Murray State Racers in first of three must win weekends

Austin Peay State University Lady GovsClarksville, TN – If Austin Peay State University’s softball team is to have a chance to qualify for the Ohio Valley Conference post-season tournament it will need to make a big push, starting this weekend, as it travels to Murray State for a three-game conference series at Racer Field.

The series starts with a, 1:00pm, Saturday doubleheader and concludes 1:00pm, Sunday with a single game.

Austin Peay (14-25, 6-15 OVC) enters the Murray State series sitting in ninth place in the conference standings, 4 1/2 games out of the sixth and final tournament spot with nine conference games remaining.

Murray State (20-15, 12-9 OVC) currently is in fourth place in the conference standings, but still has some work to do to lock up its spot in the post-season field with just a two-game cushion over the seventh-place team.

Lauren de CastroAustin Peay is led offensively by sophomore first baseman/pitcher Lauren de Castro, who is hitting at a .388 clip for the season, with team bests in runs scored (25), RBI (24), slugging percentage (.600), on-base percentage (.440), doubles (10), home runs (6) and walks (12).

Freshman shortstop Paige Neely is the only other Lady Govs hitting more than .300 after 39 games this season, and enters the weekend with a .347 batting average, 16 RBI and 13 runs scored.

Morgan BrewerIn the circle, junior Morgan Brewer leads the Lady Govs pitching staff with a 6-11 win-loss mark this season and owns a 3.22 ERA to go with 85 strikeouts in 119.2 innings of work.

Leading the team in ERA (2.69) is de Castro, who sports a 5-5 win-loss record with 54 strikeouts in 75.1 inning of work, including a career high seven strikeouts in her 6-0 shutout win, Wednesday, versus Alabama A&M.

Senior Ashley Bolda and sophomore Taylor Mills also have Lady Govs’ pitching wins this season.

Ashley BoldaThe Murray State Racers are led offensively by Megan Glosser, who enters the series batting .355 and a team-best 22 stolen bases.

Shelby Kosmecki leads the Murray State pitching staff with 101.1 innings pitched that has translated into a 9-8 overall record, a 2.14 ERA and 80 strikeouts.
