Nashvile Sounds swept by Oklahoma city RedHawks in Doubleheader on Thursday

Nashville, TN – The Nashville Sounds dropped both games of a doubleheader to the visiting Oklahoma City RedHawks on Thursday evening at Greer Stadium. The Sounds dropped a 4-3 opener and lost, 4-2, in the nightcap.

The last time Nashville was swept in a doubleheader was July 7th at Oklahoma City. The four-game skid by the Sounds dropped the club to a 4-11 record, which is the worst start by the club during the PCL era. Eleven of Nashville’s 15 games this season have been decided by one or two runs (3-8).

In the nightcap, Nashville took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning against Oklahoma City pitcher Sergio Perez, who allowed base hits and a walk to load the bases. Centerfielder Logan Schafer then looped a base hit to left field to score Corey Patterson.

Nashville starting pitcher Brian Baker struck out five of the first six batters he faced to open the game, but ran into trouble in the beginning of the third. On the second pitch of the frame from Baker, Oklahoma City second baseman Jimmy Paredes (2-for-3) belted his first homer of the season to right field to tie the game.

On the next pitch, former Sound Carlos Corporan followed with a double off the left field wall and later gave the RedHawks the 2-1 lead after scoring on a one-out single from outfielder J.B. Shuck.

Patterson knotted the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth with his first homer of the season, a solo shot over the right field wall onto Chestnut Street.

Perez left the contest after five pitches in the bottom of the third due to injury. The right-hander allowed one run on five hits in two innings of work. Fernando Abad (1-0) got the win with two scoreless frames to end the game.

Oklahoma City took the lead for good at 4-2 in the top of the seventh. Scott Moore tripled to right field and was followed by a one-out walk from Brad Snyder. With runners on second and third, Paredes hammered a hard grounder over the head of the Sounds’ drawn-in infield to plate both runners.

Schafer accounted for the tying run in the bottom of the seventh, but was stranded on second base as Edwin Maysonet struck out to end the game.

Baker pitched well to throw his first quality start of the season, but took a no-decision. The right-hander allowed two runs on three hits and two walks in six innings of work. His five strikeouts all came in the first and second innings.

Sounds reliever Victor Garate (0-2) gave up two runs on two hits and three walks in one inning for the loss.

Schafer singled twice and added a double with an RBI.  Eric Farris went 0-for-1 with two walk to snap his six-game hitting streak.

In the opener, the Sounds suffered their third straight loss and trailed the entire way for the second straight game against the ‘Hawks, falling to 1-5 against them this season.

Oklahoma City took a 1-0 lead against Sounds starter in the top of the first inning. Brian Bixler (3-for-4) led off the contest with a line-drive double into the left field corner and later scored on Scott Moore’s two-out single to center.

The RedHawks added to their advantage in the third. After Oklahoma City loaded the bases with one out on a pair of walks sandwiched around a Bixler single,  Moore drew a walk from Butler to force home pitcher Jordan Lyles and Justin Ruggiano lifted a sacrifice fly to deep center to make it a 3-1 contest.

The Sounds got onto the board in the home half of the third, pulling within a run a 3-2 against Lyles. With one out, Edwin Maysonet singled and moved to third on a Brooks Conrad double. Taylor Green followed with an RBI groundout to plate Maysonet with the first Nashville run before Sean Halton ripped a run-scoring single to right to draw the Sounds within one.

Nashville right fielder Corey Patterson kept it a one-run deficit in the top of the fifth when he robbed a two-run homer from Ruggiano with a leaping catch at the right field wall.

Butler (0-3) took a loss in his third straight start to open the year. The right-hander allowed three runs on five hits in his five innings of work, walking four batters and striking out three.

The RedHawks tacked on an insurance run in the sixth against left-hander Daniel Meadows when Brad Snyder blooped a one-out double down the right field line and scored when Landon Powell followed with a single.

The Sounds pulled back within a run at 4-3 in the bottom of the sixth when Eric Farris doubled and scored on pinch-hitter extraordinaire Erick Almonte’s two-out RBI single to right, which chased Lyles from the contest.

Lyles (3-0) notched his third consecutive winning start for the RedHawks, holding the Sounds to three runs on eight hits over 5 2/3 frames.

Xavier Cedeno worked around a pair of ninth-inning baserunners to nail down his first save of the year, striking out pinch-hitter Martin Maldonado looking to end the contest.

Farris went 2-for-3 for the Sounds in the opener to extend his hitting streak to six games, matching the longest effort by a Sounds player this season.

The Sounds and RedHawks will play the finale of a four-game set at 7:05pm CT on Friday night at Greer Stadium. Brewers #1 prospect and Sounds right-hander Wily Peralta (0-1, 2.12) takes the mound against Oklahoma City righty Henry Sosa (0-0, 3.00).
