Nashville Sounds Baseball
Nashville, TN – The Nashville Sounds snapped a four-game winning streak while entering the record books in the wrong way on Sunday afternoon, setting the highest single-game hit total allowed in franchise history in a 19-3 loss to the Round Rock Express at Greer Stadium.
The 19 Round Rock runs marked the fourth overall time an opponent has produced that output against Nashville (20-29) in the Sounds’ 35-year history and the first time since the Las Vegas 51s plated 19 on August 10th, 2010.
The 24 hits allowed surpassed the 22 hits by Albuquerque last season on June 12th, 2011 at Isotopes Park. The 19 Round Rock runs and 24 hits also were both franchise records for the Express in their seven-year history.
It was the second-largest margin of defeat for Nashville since joining the PCL in 1998. The Sounds had an 18-1 loss to the Memphis Redbirds on July 30th, 2000 at Greer Stadium.
Every batter in the Express lineup had at least one hit a hit as Round Rock batted around three times on the afternoon. Michael Bianucci (3-for-5) fell a triple short of the cycle while Matt Kata (4-for-6) and Ryan Spilborghs (4-for-5) each had four hits.
Round Rock starter Michael Kirkman (4-1) earned his fourth straight win with his second quality start of the season. The 25-year-old lefty gave up one run on three hits while striking out six in six innings.
Nashville starter Wily Peralta (1-6) struggled again from the mound in his fourth consecutive loss. The 23-year-old surrendered eight runs (six earned) on nine hits in 1 2/3 innings, the shortest Triple-A start of his career and b a Sounds starter in 2012. The right-hander has now recorded a 16.88 ERA (20er/10.2ip) in his last three starts.
Designated hitter Jordan Brown (six games) and second baseman Eric Farris (seven games) each had two hits to extend their respective season-high hitting streaks. Left-fielder Corey Patterson also had two hits while driving in two runs.
Round Rock batted around and opened the contest with four runs in the opening frame against right-hander Wily Peralta. Former sound Brad Nelson brought home the first two the first two runs scored on based-loaded single. In the ensuing at-bat, Joey Butler added the next run on an RBI single to center. The final run of the inning was scored on a Bianucci infield groundout.
Spilborghs singled home Yangervis Solarte in the third for a 9-0 deficit. Three consecutive hits from Round Rock opened the fifth frame, highlighted by a Luis Hernandez RBI single.
The Sounds broke the shutout in the bottom of the sixth. Center fielder Logan Schafer worked an inning-opening walk, advanced to third on a single from Patterson, and scored on an Andy Gonzalez sacrifice fly.
Round Rock batted around again for nine runs in the eighth inning, beginning with a three-run homer by Bianucci. Nelson, Butler, and Kata followed with RBI singles before Bianucci brought home another run on a base-loaded walk. Martinez ended the rally with a sacrifice fly.
Nashville loaded the bases and plated two late runs in the bottom of the ninth with a two-run single from Patterson.
In relief of Peralta, Donovan Hand gave up just one run on four hits in 3 1/3 innings. Amaury Rivas allowed three runs on four hits in two innings. Johnnie Lowe was touched for six runs (four earned) on five hits in one inning. Victor Garate finished the game with perfect frame.
The Sounds and Express will play the finale of a four-game set at 2:00pm CT on Memorial Day afternoon at Greer Stadium. Right-hander Claudio Vargas (0-0, 5.40) will make his first home start and will face former Sounds southpaw Zach Jackson (1-5, 4.97).
