Austin Peay State University employees report various achievements

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Several faculty and staff members at Austin Peay State University announce their recent professional and scholarly activities.

Dr. Victoria McCarthy and Dr. Robyn Hulsart, both associate professors of professional studies, won best conference paper at the May 2012 conference of The Academic Forum. The title of their paper was “A Crisis Management Plan for Ethical Misconduct and Financial Fraud.”

Dr. Carter Smith, assistant professor of criminal justice, had an article he co-wrote published in the May 2012 journal of Critical Issues in Justice and Politics. The title of the article is “Gang Investigators’ Perceptions of Military-Trained Gang Members.”

Norma Jean Smith, administrative assistant in the APSU Department of Music, was awarded the Faculty Senate Staff Service Award. The award is given to a staff member who has demonstrated excellence by contributing to the smooth operation of his or her unit, as well as the University in general. Staff members are nominated for the award by faculty, and the winner is selected by the entire Faculty Senate. Smith has given 22 years of dedicated service to the music department and 31 years of employment at APSU. Other nominees of this award were Pamela Allen, Takesha Anderson, Tami Fraley, Betty Leimer, Jasmine Jones, Melody Shipley and Susan Wallace.

Janet Velazquez, assistant director of Career Services, served as the 2011-12 vice president of Colleges for the Tennessee Association of Colleges and Employers.

Philip Voorhees, adaptive technology coordinator in the Office of Disability Services, was a speaker at the Colleges for the Tennessee Association of Colleges and Employers annual spring conference held recently in Nashville. He spoke in a session, titled “Universal design and Our Surroundings.”

Dr. Gregg Steinberg, professor of health and human performance, presented “How to Supercharge Your Energy and Performance” at the Colleges for the Tennessee Association of Colleges and Employers annual spring conference held recently in Nashville.
