Dunbar Cave State Natural Area Programs for June 3rd through June 9th

Clarksville, TNDunbar Cave State Natural Area has been a State Park since 1973. The cave and its surrounding 110 acres have considerable scenic, natural and historical significance. The entrance offered shelter to prehistoric Native Americans as far back as 10,000 years.

Dunbar Cave State Natural Area will present many nature programs this summer.

Upcoming events include: Un-Nature Hike, The Human Sundial, Bats Are Fun, Wildflower Walk, Acorn Extravaganza and so much more!

Programs are free unless noted otherwise. All programs require reservations by the deadline listed. Programs with no reservations by the deadline are canceled.

All programs begin at the Visitor Center unless another site is listed.

*Designates program that meets Junior Ranger requirements.

Children must be accompanied by an adult (one adult for each three children). The age limits are definite – please do not sign up a child who is too young or too old for the program. Call 931.648.5526 for reservations.

Sunday, June 3rd

Un-Nature Hike

Time: 8:30am–10:00am
Ages: 6 – Adult

Come hike with a ranger as we work to remove unnatural things like trash from the park.

Program Leader: Adam Neblett, Park Ranger
No Reservations Needed.


Night Hike*

Time: 8:00pm–9:15pm
Ages: All Ages

Stay in the park past closing to explore the woods and lakeshore for critters such as owls, deer, frog, and raccoons.

Monday, June 4th

The Human Sundial

Time: 10:30am–11:15am
Ages: 6 -14

Learn to tell time by using your shadow, make a sundial.

Bats Are Fun*

Time: 2:00pm–3:00pm
Ages: 5 – 8

Learn about bats through videos, books and games.

Program Leader: Amy Wallace, Interpretive Specialist
Reservations By: 4:30pm June 2nd.


Full Moon Walk*

Time: 8:30pm–9:30pm
Ages: 5-adult

Walk when the moon is full and casting its light before us. Program will be canceled if its rainy or cloudy.

Tuesday, June 5th

Wildflower Walk*

Time: 6:45pm–8:00pm
Ages: 10-Adult

Learn the names and lore of the flowers on this hike to the cave and along the lake.

Thursday, June 7th

Cave Wonders

Time: 11:00am–12:00am
Ages: 12 – adult

Explore the cool cave entrance, look for the critters that call it home.

Reservations By: 4:30pm June 5th.


Junior Ranger Kickoff*

Time: 3:00pm–4:00pm
Ages: 6-14

You can become a junior ranger! Pick up a Junior Ranger Adventure Guide and complete some of the activities to get your badge and certificate!

Program Leaders: Park Interpretive Specialist, Ranger and SIR
Reservations By: 4:30pm June 6th.

Friday, June 8th

Beginning Birding*

Time: 9:00am–10:30am
Ages: 5 – 11

Learn birds by sight and sound in this program that introduces you to our most common birds.

Program Leader: Amy Wallace, Interpretive Specialist
Reservations By: 4:30pm June 6th.


Acorn Extravaganza

Time: 2:00pm–3:00pm
Ages: 5 and up

Learn fun facts about acorns and make an acorn necklace to take home with you.

Program Leader: Dave Webb, Seasonal Interpretive Ranger
Reservations By: 4:30pm June 6th.


Night Hike*

Time: 8:15pm–9:15pm
Ages: All Ages

Walk a mile as we explore the woods and lakeshore for nocturnal critters such as owls, deer, frog, and raccoons.

Saturday, June 9th

Walnut Friends

Time: 10:30am–11:00am
Ages: 5 and up

Make a fun walnut figure as you learn about this nut.
