Lesson #5 from the cat on the deck

Frank White

As abruptly as he had returned, the cat on the deck disappeared again.  What first appeared to be the beginning of a routine of lounging on the deck has turned out to be a much less predictable lifestyle for this cat.

Let me see if I can reconstruct this.  He appeared on the deck scrawny and in need.  He finally got sympathy that was mobilized into action in the form of daily rations.hello

He enjoyed the routine long enough to change his countenance from scrawny to plump.  Then he began to roam.  His brief forays into the woods eventually turned into an extended expeditions.  When he returned from his odyssey, he was demanding food.  After a day of eating and resting, he was gone as quickly as he had returned.

Now, perhaps it is becoming clear that the cat we never wanted responsibility for anyway is only using us.  He has found us as a wayfaring station, a port in the storm, a haven of rest.  He has tested his theory and found that he can return and receive a bowl of food on demand.

So, if the adventures in the woods get too wearisome or if the hunting adventures don’t prove successful he knows he can always return for a bowl of dry cat food and fresh water.

He is enjoying the life of an adventurer with the luxury of an outpost for respite.

Lesson #5 from the cat on the deck:

You may be wild at heart.  And, you may be brave enough to unleash your heart.  But, there is comfort in the security of an oasis you can always rely on.
