Dunbar Cave State Natural Area Programs for June 11th through June 16th

Clarksville, TNDunbar Cave State Natural Area has been a State Park since 1973. The cave and its surrounding 110 acres have considerable scenic, natural and historical significance. The entrance offered shelter to prehistoric Native Americans as far back as 10,000 years.

Dunbar Cave State Natural Area will present many nature programs this summer.

Upcoming events include: Bats, The Human Sundial, Cave Wonders,  Frogs and Toads, Tree Identification Hike and so much more!

Programs are free unless noted otherwise. All programs require reservations by the deadline listed. Programs with no reservations by the deadline are canceled.

All programs begin at the Visitor Center unless another site is listed.

*Designates program that meets Junior Ranger requirements.

Children must be accompanied by an adult (one adult for each three children). The age limits are definite – please do not sign up a child who is too young or too old for the program. Call 931.648.5526 for reservations.

Monday, June 11th

Bats*

Time: 5:00pm–6:00pm
Ages: 8 – adult

Watch our wonderful video on The Secret World of Bats and see marvelous bats from all over the world doing all kinds of things.

Tuesday, June 12th

Nature Finds: Scavenger Hunt*

Time: 4:00pm–5:00pm
Ages: 4 – 9

We will walk around the lake and look for interesting natural things and learn how they fit together.

Don’t Be A Bully – Plant Native*

Time: 5:00pm-6:00pm
Ages: 6 – 14

Some plants will take over the woods and natural areas – learn what plants you shouldn’t have in a garden.

Fireflies

Time: 7:45pm–8:45pm
Ages: All Ages

Lightning bugs, glowworms, little lanterns of the night. Join us for a program on these magical insects.

Wednesday, June 13th

Frogs and Toads*

Time: 3:00pm–4:15pm
Ages: 3 – 8

Join us as we learn how frogs and toads are different and how they are alike, and take a short frog hike to TRY to find some.

Thursday, June 14th

Tree Identification Hike*

Time: 9:00am–10:30am
Ages: 6-adult

Walk the Short Loop (1 mile) trail with a ranger and learn about some of the common trees you can find in the park and maybe even your back yard.

The Human Sundial

Time: 11:00am–12:00am
Ages: 6 – 14

Learn to tell time by using your shadow, and make a sundial.

Friday, June 15th

Cave Wonders*

Time: 2:00pm–2:45pm
Ages: 12 – adult

Explore the cool cave entrance, look for the critters that call it home like phoebes, salamanders, spiders and millipedes.

Saturday, June 16th

Acorn Extravaganza

Time: 10:00am–11:00am
Ages: 5 and up

Learn fun facts about acorns and make an acorn necklace to take home with you.

Night Hike*

Time: 8:15pm–9:15pm
Ages: All Ages

Here’s your chance to be in the park past closing time. Wear sturdy shoes, bring water and walk a mile as we explore the woods and lakeshore for nocturnal critters such as owls, deer, frog, and raccoons.
