Fort Campbell’s New Commissary to open June 13th

Fort Campbell, KY – Fort Campbell and Defense Commissary Agency officials will open the agency’s newest full-service grocery store at Fort Campbell, June 13th.

The community is invited to attend the 9:00am ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new commissary at 2606 Indiana Avenue on post. Doors to the $24 million facility will open immediately following.

“This is a great time for all Fort Campbell,” said Tony Matthias, store director. “The new store is significantly larger than the one it’s replacing, and it was designed with all our customers in mind, whether they’re active duty or retired, single or married with children.”

Many events and special promotional offers are planned to make the opening fun. There will be opportunities throughout the month for customers to win prizes and save money, so customers can get in on deals well beyond the opening day.

The old Fort Campbell Commissary will close at 8:00pm on Monday, June 11th. No commissary services will be available at Fort Campbell on Tuesday, June 12th, as the commissary staff prepares for the grand opening.

Matthias said the modern look of the new store with its state-of-the art equipment like electronic shelf labels, is something customers will readily notice. What’s not as evident is that the equipment, lighting and heat-and-air systems are much more energy efficient, which makes the commissary more environmentally friendly. Sustainability and energy-saving features are priorities for DeCA, he said.

Besides the much larger, more spacious sales area, the new store has more self checkouts; and the international delicatessen, bakery, fresh meat and produce sections are larger, in keeping with customer demand, he said.

It offers a great environment to provide the commissary benefit, Matthias said, explaining that commissaries sell groceries at cost plus a 5-percent surcharge, saving customers an average of more than 30 percent on purchases compared to commercial prices. Surcharge funds are used to construct and renovate commissaries, and that’s what was used to build the new store.

“The new décor and overall look of the store are really impressive,” he said. “Our customers have a great place to shop and enjoy their commissary benefit.”
