Fort Campbell, KY – The official color of the Strike Brigade is once again gold as the teams representing the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), brought back the well sought after Week of the Eagles 2012 Commander’s Cup.

“A phenomenal job winning the Week of the Eagles,” said Lt. Col. Townley Hedrick, the deputy commanding officer for the Strike brigade, when speaking about the Strike Soldiers. “This brigade has great, young leaders, officers and non-commissioned officers, who lead by example and make things happen.”

For the past week, Strike went toe-to-toe with the units of Fort Campbell in sporting events and Soldiering skills, earning points for the Commander’s Cup. The events were the 5-Kilometer and 10K Runs, the Legacy Golf Tournament, Toughest Air Assault Competition, Marksmanship Competition, combatives, basketball, dodgeball, softball and ultimate frisbee. The teams of the Strike Brigade overwhelmingly won most of the competitions with a total of 2,425 points out of a possible 4600.

“The Strike Brigade worked hard to bring the Commanders Cup back to the 2nd BCT, where it will remain for years,” said Command Sgt. Maj. Brandon Haywood, command sergeant major for the 2nd BCT. “We win regardless if it’s on the battlefield or on the playing field and I am extremely proud of the Soldiers of the Strike Brigade.”

The victorious brigade attributes its accomplishments in the latest Week of the Eagles to its unit pride and dedication towards success.

“The Commander’s Cup represents our Soldiers’ desire to win, to be the best and to not accept second place,” said Hedrick. “It’s representative of the mindset of the US Army; we will win wherever our country asks us to fight.”

Currently, advisory teams from the Strike Brigade are deployed to eastern Afghanistan where they are ensuring transition of effective combat power to the Afghan National Security Forces. The Commander’s Cup is now dedicated to the Strike advisory teams and Col. Dan Walrath, the commander of the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, who was recently wounded by a suicide bomber in Afghanistan.

“Col. Walrath challenged the Strike teams to bring home the Commander’s Cup and I think all of our Soldiers would want it dedicated to him as he tackles his own recovery,” said Hedrick. “We know he’ll win.”

Winning the 5K Run, the Marksmanship Competition, golf, dodgeball, softball and the popular combatives tournament is not easy to pull off and the Strike Brigade plans to continue its success here at Fort Campbell and in eastern Afghanistan.

“The Soldiers of the Strike Brigade work from intent and accomplish any mission given to them,” said Haywood. “We are Strike Soldiers and we fight where told and win where we fight, Strike!”
