Critics in the United States and Europe have hailed Darnell for her “wonderfully bell-like tones” (Wertheimer Zeitung). A regional finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, she has been in demand as soprano soloist of major concert and oratorio repertoire and has been a featured soloist with the Naples Philharmonic Orchestra, Opera Naples, Patronato Peruano de la Música Centenarios, Operafestival di Roma, Corsi Internazionali di Musica, Omaha Symphony, Arkansas Symphony Orchestra, Denver Bach Festival, Naples Bach Ensemble, Fort Myers Symphonic Master Singers, Lindsborg Messiah Festival, Colorado Music Festival and Rocky Mountain Music Alliance.

“She was one of our finest students and has really made a wonderful career in singing, teaching and research – a multifaceted, very intelligent singer,” Dr. Sharon Mabry, APSU professor of music, said. “We are really proud of her and delighted to have her come back to sing and meet the students and give us her expertise in several areas.”

At 9:30am on September 19th, Darnell will also host a master class in the concert hall where she will work with five singers in front of an audience. At 12:20pm that day, in room 232 of the Music/Mass Communication Building, she will also give a lecture on her internationally recognized research on the young male adolescent voice. This lecture will be particularly informative for music educators working with that age group.

Darnell holds a Doctor of Musical Arts in vocal performance and pedagogy from the University of Colorado-Boulder. She received a Master of Music in performance from the University of Oklahoma, and her Bachelor of Arts in performance from APSU.  She is currently associate professor of music and head of vocal studies at Florida Gulf Coast University’s Bower School of Music and has served on the faculty of the Corsi Internazionali di Musica Summer Music Festival in both Urbino and Perugia, Italy.

Pianist Michael Baron will accompany Darnell during her September 20th performance. An award-winning concert pianist, Baron performs more than 50 concerts each year, including annual tours of Europe and engagements throughout the United States, Asia, and South America.

He serves as professor of music and head of keyboard studies at the Bower School of Music at Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers, FL. He is also honorary professor of music at Yantai University and Hubei University in the People’s Republic of China.
