APSU Sports: Austin Peay Women’s Golf
Ledbetter, KY – Austin Peay State University women’s golf team sits in sixth place after the first round of the Drake Creek Invitational, being held Drake Creek Golf Club.
The tourney’s first 18 holes were played earlier today, with the second 18 holes battling weather elements and early darkness during the afternoon. The 54-hole event is schedule to be completed Tuesday on the par-72, 6,178-yard layout.The Lady Govs shot an opening-round 310 to six right in the middle of the 11-team pack. Belmont led the way with a first-round 292 while Arkansas State was second at 300. Host Murray State (302), Colombia (304), Central Arkansas (306) were ahead of the Govs.
Junior Tala Mumford led APSU with a 74 during the opening round while senior Lauren Bond had a 76. Freshman Jessica Cathey and Tabitha Beard, both shooting 80s, were the Lady Govs’ other two scorers. Senior Holly Batey came in at 84. Sophomore Meghan Mueller, playing as an individual, also had an 84.
The Lady Govs were solid on both par 3 (+1) and par 5 (tourney-best +6), but it was the par 4’s that created the problems. APSU was +27 on those 12 holes.
