Austin Peay State University Lady GovsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University women’s soccer team opens Ohio Valley Conference play at 2:00pm, Sunday, when they host archrival Murray State.

The Lady Govs (4-5-0) hope to have the offense clicking again after last Sunday’s 6-1 shellacking of Alabama A&M, led by junior Morgan Zigelsky’s two goals. Austin Peay has outscored opponents 17-13 this season, but have been shut out in four of five losses.

“I thought Morgan really stepped up last weekend,” said head coach Kelley Guth. “She’s become a leader for our team. Last year she was new to the program, but she’s really become a big presence for us.”

Murray State (2-5-0) lost five in a row to open the season but won both matches last weekend. Senior Veronika Pribyslavsk, who netted a hat trick against Alabama A&M, and freshmen Halle Pinkham and Latesha Stevenson swept the OVC weekly awards for last week. Pribyslavsk leads the Racers with four goals and eight points this season, while Stevenson netted conference Goalkeeper of the Week honors this week for work in her first two career starts.

Tatiana ArizaThe Lady Govs are 4-7-1 all-time against the Racers, but have won the previous two meetings. Last season a pair of second-half penalty kick goals, one in the game’s final minute, by junior Tatiana Ariza spurred the Lady Govs to a 2-1 comeback victory at Murray State.

“It’s not going to be easy but we think we can go out and win any conference game,” Guth said. “It’s going to be a challenge since obviously our opponent will want to win as much as we do. We’re going to work hard to persevere over any obstacles that get in our way and look to get good results at the end of the day.”

Keep An Eye On

Emily PerkinsSenior Emily Perkins needs one point to pass Adonia Bivins (2003-08) for sole possession of seventh place all-time on APSU’s career points list; the pair are currently tied with 22 points apiece.

With one goal this weekend, Tatiana Ariza would pass Ashley Beck (2005-08) for most goals in school history (31). With one assist, she would equal the fourth-best single-season mark in school history, tying her 2010 mark as well as Erin Mitchell (2004) and Andy Quiceno (2011).

Natalia ArizaJunior Natalia Ariza needs one point to break her tie with Kaylee Yago (2002-05) and Erica Dengler (2003-06) for fourth all-time in scoring; all three are currently deadlocked at 30. A goal for Ariza would move her past Yago and Dengler in points and tie her with the duo for fourth all-time in goals scored with 12.

With six saves, junior Haylee Shoaff will tie Michelle Smith (2006-08) for third all-time in career saves.

The Lady Govs go on the road in the OVC for the first time in 2012, next weekend, at UT Martin (September 28th at 7:00pm) and Southeast Missouri (September 30th at 1:00pm)

SEMO Athlete Passes Away

Meg HerndonSenior Meg Herndon, of the Southeast Missouri soccer team, passed away Thursday afternoon due to injuries suffered in a September 9th auto accident.

A moment of silence will be observed prior to the Lady Govs match against Murray State, Sunday, and donations will be accepted at the marketing table to help Meg’s family offset the cost of her medical expenses.

The Lady Govs will be taking donations outside Governors Stadium prior to Saturday’s football game as well.
